It depends, they went after Madoff. I suspect they'd go after Elon if they can prove it. It's not like he has a bunch of friends at the SEC, or no one knows, or he is operating under the toad. That administration was more an aberration than a general MO, usually, the SEC does indeed go after high-profile securities fraud. The other huge investors do not want one of their own to destabilize the market. If the system gets a reputation for fraud, everyone loses. They all know that.

I think people don't think these people are accountable because sometimes they're not - 2008 springs immediately to mind, but most of the time the story breaks, and there's a tizzy, and then it's complicated and takes years before there's a conviction or a sanction. It's also very difficult to prove the necessary state of mind because usually the evidence is hearsay or circumstantial, and rarely are the accused stupid enough to leave a clear trail. By the time there is a resolution the talking heads are selling some other outrage and no one cares anymore.
 
It also has to be said that one of the biggest reasons there is a perception of no justice for white-collar crimes in the last few decades, is that the Republican party will object to pursuing it and weaken regulation and enforcement authority whenever they can, by fair means or foul.

At this point the irony of Musk targeting journalists or anyone else criticizing him or reporting on his erratic, bizarre and destructive behaviour just burns.

Having him and Taibi trying to break the big story about how powerful executives interfered with the content on Twitter, while he is daily trying to suppress content on Twitter...he is a sick, twisted man.

That was not my point and you know it.

The right has been screaming about their "free speech right" to spread disinformation, conspiracies, pro-insurrection, and anti-vax propaganda being censored and "cancelled" for years. But as soon as someone else's free speech that conflicts with them gets banned or censored, we hear nothing. That's perfectly ok. Hypocrites. Specifically, Elon Musk and the far Reich minions.

I'm not arguing with you, the only question is are they just ignorant or is it willful blindness - or both?

Frankly, everyone else needs to start using the law and suing. It's gone beyond being nice, and it's time for some consequence.
