Elon has bought a bunch of land in Texas on the mouth of the Rio Grande. This used to be the cities of Boca Chica Village and Kopernik Shores, settlements of Polish and Latino Americans. SpaceX started buying up the land in 2014 to use as Musk's launchpad for his sometimes successful rocket launches.

In 2021, Musk changed the name Starbase, Texas and in 2025 passed a referendum to incorporate the area as a city. Local Musk-friendly citizens ran for offices like the mayor.



What no one realized was, that by incorporating, the citizens who are mostly SpaceX employees, gave the city of Starbase, Texas the right of eminent domain. SpaceX can now get the city to condemn privately-owned land and then buy the land to use for SpaceX projects.
