Is fashion another way older gay men are made to feel not wanted?

Yes it that time of year again the fall fashion is coming out and while looking at the standard gay rags of my community I notice some most of the hip in style would look great on a single guy in his teens and twenties but would look stupid on me or in fact Most guys around my age.

I know some of what this shown is over the top, but even if it were to be toned done it might look great on some one young and single. But what about some of us who are older and single After all don't we have the right to look good for our age?

Think about it would kind of be nice if some one designed a line for the over 30 crowd that looked just as cool as the under 30s crowd.
 
Fashion is specifically tailored to the younger set. Why? I think because they're more likely to be of a bodytype where fashion looks good, and they're more likely to be convinced to lay out heavy money to look good. Older folks tend to either be smarter (or more slobbish, depending on your point of view) when it comes to clothing.

i agree. however it should be noted that just because you become a certain age you cannot look your best. a well dressed man will almost always look great regardless of their age. i think you just have to look around, evaluate the items you gravitate towards and go from there. and this doesn't necessarily mean a well fitted suit but casual clothing as well.

Not a problem in SoCal... teens dress like their fathers because Pops never out-grew the beach look.
 
^Maybe you should move closer to the beach. I pretty much wear beach clothes all year, which means I never put shorts away.

I taught myself to sew when I was 21 and started making clothes for myself when I couldn't find what I wanted in stores. I moved to San Francisco when I was 22, and there I met people who liked my clothes so much that they hired me to make clothes for them as well, and my career as a fashion designer was born - despite having had no formal training in design or sewing. I did, however, have strong ideas about what I wanted to wear, and nothing was going to stop me from wearing it. I even dyed and painted fabric when I couldn't find the colors or patterns that I wanted. I would like to have had my fabric designs manufactured, but so far I have not pursued that very far, even though the last company I worked for has a textile department. I submitted a design to them, but they were not interested in producing designs from outside. I would also like to design custom shoes for myself.

My designs tend to be a bit theatrical (and I've made costumes for the stage), and once I got pulled on stage by a comedienne at an AIDS benefit on Valentine's day at the PDC. I was wearing jeans I had made from a black and white cow print pattern, red Doc Martens, black & white polka dot socks, a white shirt with ruffled sleeves, and a clear plastic vest. The comedienne (I forget her name, but she reminded me of Jane Dornacker) then proceeded to make fun of me on stage, but since I didn't have access to the mike, I was unable to defend myself. Later someone at the event came up to me and said, "I loved your act - are you one of the cabana boys?" I love that I can get away with things like that living here.

I have found interesting men's fashion in WeHo and on Melrose, including clear plastic pants, wire mesh pants (which after a while developed a bit of rust), and lots of very interesting shirts - therefore I have not felt the need to make that many clothes recently.
 
I'm no Spring chicken either.
I avoid anything too trendy. It usually doesn't look that great on younger guys either, and by next year you'd feel foolish wearing it.
As gay men, we can always go the route of tee shirts, jeans and sneakers and fit in just fine.
It can be updated by a nice sweater, jeans or khakis and loafers or boots.
For dressy clothes always go with traditional and they'll always be in style.
Clean and neat trumps flamboyant everytime.

It does pay well. It was the highest paying job I've ever had, but I only did it in my 20s. It allowed me to do quite a bit of traveling, so that I didn't have to stay in San Francisco for the cold wet winters or the cold foggy August.
 
I agree, fashion is usually aimed at the young guys. At my age, I would look like a clown if I tried to wear Prada. However, I think no matter what your age, you can still look great if you take care of yourself and have an eye for what looks good on you. Don't try to look like something you're not. Older men can still look like they belong in the 21 st century if they have good grooming, control their weight, exercise, and have a positive attitude. I wear some of the clothes the younger men wear but I'm very selective about what I buy. Like the old saying goes; anyone can buy fashion but not everyone has style.

Yeah, I try everything on in the store and nix the ridiculous stuff. It does pain me sometimes to put things back that don't work well with my age.

One thing though....you can get away with a lot more being a gay man. Well...in gay crowds that is. Go to a gay party or club or cookout and the rules are suspended. That makes it much more fun to go to gay get-to-gethers.
 
Darling, please. Fashion is for the young... style is for grownups. After the age of thirty-five, you should know what to wear without resorting to the pages of a magazine.

Men (and women) "of a certain age" aren't worth selling to because we already know what we want. And so the magazines cater to the young who don't know what to want and need to be instructed.
