  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Is Florida about to get its own version of Section 28?

/\ What does the bill say/contain? Do you know?

I should think that since it involves possible court cases, it must spell everything out.

From what little I know/have read about this, it could pertain to keeping teachers from spouting their personal opinions in the classroom - possibly shaming students that show any type of same sex or gender crossing behaviours.

It's more to do with taking one bad teacher to court. Not every teacher in the state. ?

It is not about one teacher. It is about treating lgbtq people as the 'other' in order to gin up a conservative religious base. And it is an issue that someone has figured out crosses race, religion, age and other lines.

/\ Do you not see/understand that your meme is about home life/a parent's perspective? It has absolutely nothing to do with teachers.

Of course I do.

And do you understand what the real intent of this legislation is?

Yup. It's to miminalize, trivialize, and erase LGBT people.

This law is horrible. Are there no local policies to shield the youngest students from truly inappropriate or harmful things?

So much is on the margin. Are first graders not supposed to know Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is married to Chasten? Some Florida cities hold Gay Pride events during the school year. If a second grader goes with his parents to the parade, is this something that can't be mentioned? And so many other situations, not to mention some trans kids know who they are at a very young age.

As has been previously pointed out, "Don't say gay" is a misleading characterization of the actual language of the bill.

No matter how false it is, this is now repeated as a partisan epithet by Democrats and their supporters in the media. White House spokesman Jen Psaki called it "horrific." Chas Buttigieg, husband to Secretary of Transportation "Mayor Pete" Buttigieg, tweeted that the law "will kill kids."

Postponing discussions of human sexuality until fourth grade is "horrific"? Will kill children?" Gimme a break!

Why has this issue—Republican elected officials saying "no" to the pedagogical sexualization of very young children—evoked such a response, other than as yet another opportunity to label Republicans as bigots thereby shoring up their perceived base and enlisting the vast group of voters who are appalled at bigotry.

Someone needs to remind the party that this will backfire. As Bill Maher has asked, "Is Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill designed to trap Democrats into saying they support teaching young children about sexuality?" Whether or not the bill was designed this way, Democrats and their corporate media buddies have done that. In an era of seemingly infinite political stupidity, it's difficult to think of anything more politically idiotic—not to mention morally dubious—than Democratic legislators skipping down the state capitol hallway shouting "Gay!" to protest a bill that defers sex-talk with kids until...fourth grade.

/\ This seems to be an accurate assessment. LOL

It appears that most (perhaps all) of the [so-called news] articles I've read have been little more than fake drama for weak-minded bandwagon hoppers written by click-bait artists.

"So I went to the library. . ." LOL;

No, no, no, no, no!

What you guys are missing is that this is NOT a bill designed to address some existing problem. NOBODY wants this bill except Republicans in the Florida Legislature and DeSantis. It was not proposed by teachers, administrators, school counselors, parents, school boards, or any "experts." There is no existing problem that needs to be addressed. Remember that schools have a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience with children, instruction, and what goes on in the classroom, including things that are appropriate and inappropriate for children of all ages. Schools already have authority to correct or discipline any teacher or school official who says or does anything inappropriate, including discussing, warning, removing the person, or firing the offending person, depending on the seriousness of the offense.

Please stop pretending this is about protecting children from overzealous advocates and pedophiles. That is exactly what those that pushed this bill want you to think. Given the long history of our community being attacked and bludgeoned by politicians pushing anti-gay bills and rhetoric, it is sad to see that even some gay people are falling for this.

I forgot to mention that in the second link there is a link to download a pdf of the bill text.

Don't be afraid to read it. It's not magical, and there are only a few words with more than three syllables.

It appears those were the actual texts of the Florida House and Senate bills voted on. Just because a bill is called something in the text doesn't mean that is what the bill really is about. Bills are often given names by their sponsors for propaganda purposes.

I'm not associated with either party because they both suck---the far right want anti-gay Christianity taught in schools and the far left want gender identity taught in pre-K.

The right wing defenders of the Bill don't understand this and no amount of explanation will convince them. And the right wing LGBTQ have always had a tradition of supporting legislation like this. I am sure the Quislings over at the Log Cabin Republican HQ are busy defending the bill.

Fascism 101: Create faux outrage and fear about a nonexistent threat in an ignorant, brainwashed public, and you can control them. This is all just one more link in the chain of fascism winding its tentacles throughout state legislatures. It will, sooner than you think, have enough unstoppable power, at enough governmental levels, to enslave and strangle the entire country. Sieg Heil.

But...isn't gender identity already taught in pre-K? For cisgender kids, for sure.

Jesus, I have seen it with my own eyes and heard with my own ears the cishet adults at extended family gatherings teasing pre-schoolers about having a boyfriend or girlfriend and whether they have kissed them.

Sometimes I could throw up.

Meanwhile, in our family, my niece and her husband and my sister and I are quite comfortable using LGBTQ as a term or talking about one of her trans staffers in front of my g-nephew who has turned 6 and has told people about his two uncles who live together.

Again, this bill is about erasure and a vehicle to remind everyone that being LGBTQ makes you the 'other' and a shameful secret somehow.

^ I'm certainly TOTALLY on board with that! And also removing "Under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance - or, better yet, removing the Pledge of Allegiance entirely. (I mean, worshiping a "specialized" sheet of cloth that is made in a factory? Sheesh...)

And I say all of this as the Christian that I am. I don't believe, in any way, forcing my religion on somebody else.

^ Ahh...a real Christian. Why is it that the voices of the fake, selfish, hateful religious types always drown out the voices of those who practice their faith in an honest way?

I definitely think this 'don't say gay' nonsense is going to backfire in some way. You can't cancel gay any more than you can cancel thunderstorms or the color green. If anything, it's going to give activists more incentive to dig their heels in and fight. This whole "owning the libs" thing is so foolhardy....I know whenever I see some dipshit in a Trump t-shirt and no mask trying to "own" me it just strengthens my views.

Half of Florida will likely be underwater in another ten years so fuck 'em.

That reminds me of something I read a few days ago -

When someone tells me they are a Christian, I ask:

"Classic Jesus or Republican Jesus?"

You have to these days. You don't want to get shot.

You spelled Republican Je$u$ wrong.
