Is Good Friday a holiday where you are and do you have hot cross buns?

It's Good Friday morning here in New Zealand. It's an official public holiday. It is one of only 2 days with no newspapers (the other being Christmas). No shops are allowed to open except Petrol Stations and convenience stores that sell milk and bread etc (we call dairies). Basically, everyone sits around twiddling thumbs (or alternatively doing housework or getting out in the garden, or watching videos or browsing the internet [ie like me now]).

It's also the day for hot cross buns. They're a spicy bun with sultanas that are heated up in the oven and spread with butter, which duly melts, and runs down you chin while you are eating it.

Yup, definitely is a hot cross buns day here in .za.

Big high-end retailer Woolworths made a bit of a blunder, labelling all their hot-cross buns as Halaal and causing the Christians to have a collective massive, frothing benny about the whole thing.

I shall be spending my Good Friday at work, and then - if the wind plays ball - down at the beach. Hopefully it turns out like last year, where a chain of events turned it into Very Good Friday indeed. :sex:

It's not a public holiday in the USA. Some Catholics and other Christians take the afternoon off to attend Good Friday services, but there's no legal holiday. Yes I have hot buns.

Yum, hot cross buns. I've been eating them for about the last 2 months!

Good Friday is a Bank Holiday here in the UK. So the Banks and some businessess close, schools are off etc but most things run as usual. Same with Easter Monday.

Easter Sunday is the official easter day when everything closes. I'm just glad I get 2 weeks off uni to catch up on all my coursework.

Is Easter a big thing in the US? My friend did a semester there last year and said its not a big deal at all, barely recognised. I find that hard to believe though with it being of such signifiance to the christian faith.

Here in South Africa it is a very traditional holiday. We chase bunnies and the ones we catch become Easter Saturday Pie! We kill them by kikcing down their homes...

Also they aren't allowed to broadcast advertisements on television or radio today or on Easter Sunday.
Sunday is the day for chocolate Easter Eggs. Our ones are normally filled with marshmallow. :-)

It's a Statutory Holiday here in Canada, too (as is Easter Monday). Most stores will be open on one or other of the days though.

Hot cross buns are widely available as well. Here in Alberta, we can also get Paska, which is a rich sweetbread, originally brought over by Ukrainian Immigrants. It usually features a cross surrounded by fancy dough ornaments. It's taken to church on Easter morning (along with other foods, in a small basket) to be blessed by the priest, while the choir sing the traditional hymn "Christ is Risen".

It's kind of a big deal if you're christian and follow your religion. In the U.S. it's kind of a mixed bag not of the high order of Christmas but nevertheless the same commercial aspects (Easter bunnies and baskets of candy and spring clothing and retail nonsense) combined with the christian observance that Christ has risen, symbolizing a time for spiritual renewal and rebirth.

Nice. My background is Ukrainian too and we celebrate both Easters, the "English" one and the "Ukrainian" one. We follow the traditions of each one, including making pysanka, paska and attending haiulky. I like the traditions, but I'm not a big church goer. I just love all the food!!!

It is Good Friday Eve here, though I might have thought they would have called it Terribly Bad Friday. Not such a fan of the buns. I love the look of them. And maybe if they only had sultanas I'd eat them, but here they put bits of peel in and I do not enjoy it. Can I just substitute a cinnamon roll...

That's really funny. Now I imagine they'll over-compensate by offering bacon sarnies made from Hot Cross Buns.

Played a game of "See if you can find where I've hidden my eggs" did you?

I forgot to buy hot cross buns this years, I also forgot to buy Easter Eggs, but that's probably because our Supermarkets put their Easter Egg displays up on Boxing Day and I ignored them out of boredom with excessive marketing. I am pleased that based on that logic Christmas decorations will be out by May. I love plastic Santa's.

I have always found hot cross buns disappointing.

Although you can make a good French Toast out of them.

But yes...it is a holiday here.

Amen. I was ready for a day off.

BTW.

Here is a part of an icon inspired portrait of the BVM made from 15,000 easter eggs

here in very Catholic Costa Rica it is Semana Santa (Holy Week) and always Thursday and Fridays before Easter is a national holiday and everything closes AND all liquor sales are illegal from Midnight Wed/Thurs until midnight Fri/Sat. Dumb rule because they (me included) drink even more from our "stash"!

It's fascinating what you can learn about Alberta from a person who has immigrated here.. :D

I thought it was a holiday in all "Christian" countries.

In .za, it's the most observed day of the year. Many more businesses/stores trade on Christmas Day (and it's not that many to start with) than Good Friday.
