HI, I am wondering whether to try the free version of Google Earth. Anyone here got it?
what do you think?
Does it use much memory downloading it and having it?
Is it really exploring Earth's terrain or is it a 3D simulation?

should I get it or not..........?#-o

Definitely check it out. I think it's alot of fun to use, and it works pretty well on a variety of connection speeds.

Google Earth is a really cool site. It lets you pan the image to get a three dimensional view. But it requires a high speed connection.

Google maps is good too. And easy to use if you are still on dial up.

Google earth is topographical map of the earth with 3d terrain with satellite and aerial photography superimposed on it. There are multiple layers that can be turned on or off showing things like road, railways, shops, attractions, 3D buildings in some cities etc. etc.

It is great for sharing places over the internet as you can select a view point and save it at a small .kmz file and messenger it to a mate who just clicks it and google earth will open and take him there. It is a great way to share places and it is free. You can route plan with it and it will fly you over the route you are going to take. You must have a fast connection as has been mentioned.

Well Trawler69 ................btw i have missed you-------as far as i know there are 3 speeds of broadband...? I have slowest

Now about google earth. say there appeared a cropcircle in Wiltshire tomorrow. How soon could I see it with Googleearth?

I would say several months, when you zoom right in you get pictures taken from a plane so obviously it can't fly over every day/week/month.

Now the best thing with Google Maps are the mashups you get. There are all sorts, for example there is one which gets all the crime stats and maps them on Google Maps so you can see which neighbourhoods to avoid .

What do the 'crime stats' say about the Whitehouse, The City of London, etceteraaa? :help:

/\ at this point in time i think i agree and for the same reason. i just recently started using the MS live earth thing. although i've used google earth for a couple years. both are super cool, but neither are "live" images so it's a long while before areas are updated and some I can't see have been updated at all in the few years they've been in existence.

google maps on the other hand, while cool, you can't tilt the view to see 3D terran and you can't see 3D buildings. google earth used to only have black and white picture.

Try going between both google earth and Live maps (http://maps.live.com) they both have different features and imagery. Also if you are looking for a more scientific application, that has different types of sat imagery as well as weather overlays take a look at NASA World Wind:

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
They just released a java version, but if your running windows, download the .net version, its got more features and runs faster.

The weather channel also put their radar maps ontop of Microsoft's Live Maps for a pretty cool app:

So your saying that I dont need Google Earth? or the links you suggest are as good or better...

Very similar just try them and if you like them then you can download one of the apps they have more features but if you just want to look at satelite images its easier to just use the websites

Google Maps has a pretty cool feature called Street View. It allows you to go down to street level and actually see images of the street. Try the following link and you will see a little person which you can drag to any blue outlined road.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8...7&z=14&om=1&layer=c&cbll=25.798271,-80.209595

It currently works in San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, Las Vegas, Denver and Miami.

No. Google Earth is a bit of bloated software, requiring lots of processing power. The only thing going for it is that you can see places with user pics if you are interested in such things.

Else I suggest you use http://www.flashearth.com which has all the features of zoom in and out, and via the Microsoft data, allows you to see street name information as well. Else use Google maps which is ok.
