  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

Is it ethical to lie in order to give blood?

I'm glad they don't want my blood. Needles and blood being sucked out of me make me queasy.

Surely CBS(Canadian Blood Service) doesn't think it is. They are suing a gay guy who filled a lie at mandatory questionnaire that he had no sexual contact with man since 1980s(I can't recall the year exactly but somewhere around that) but admitted later on that he had it 3 years ago. Mind you he had no STD nor HIV and they thoroughly checked it before he was allowed to. These questionnaires are base on findings of early HIV era and they still haven't changed it yet and, when asked by the journalist, they said they have no plan as well. Now, that gay guy is counter suing blood service for violating his charter right.

I honestly have always been bothered by this and felt it should be one of the major points on the gay agenda.

I find nothing amoral about saving people's lives if you're only crime is misleading a bigot.

I lied to sell my blood (got $40 bucks for it, too!) but I won't lie to donate it. If Red Cross doesn't want my faggot blood, they won't get it. Or my money, either. A lot of people I know lied in order to donate blood after 9/11, and I'm glad they did something they felt was helping, but I think in the long run it made the Red Cross feel like it could hang onto its anti-gay policy without repercussions...in a time of great need, everyone stepped up their donations, and it was all "straight" people, so why should they change?

I really think it's important to deprive support from companies and agencies who have anti-gay policies, even when the rest of the work they do is good. When they start to feel it in their pockets, when the people they serve start to go without, they might rethink their policy; and if they don't, it won't be my gay dollars in their paychecks.

Oh, and if you have to sign a paper saying that you're not gay, and you do, your lie just upped itself to fraud. I don't know about the ethics, but I know that's illegal.

Am I missing something? Where is the lie? What question are u being asked? And if you know that you don't have a std then what is the lie?:^o

It's a topic that's sorta come up before: The issue is that most blood donation places won't accept the blood of homosexuals, possibly in the belief that they have sex more often and so tend to pick up things that they shouldn't,usually without knowing. Ergo, the lie is not disclosing your sexuality.

Bigoted, and a practice that needs to stop.

You mean in California they can discriminate against you because you're gay? Are you sure?

they ask if you are gay because you have a high chance of passing on the HIV virus.

^But you see, they're not depriving you of anything by discriminating, they're depriving themselves. For a suit to stand, you have to have been harmed. You are not harmed by not having your blood taken out of your body.

That's why they've been getting away with it. Even in California.

as long as GAY means u shouldnt im not gonna unless its for an autologous transfusion

Maybe I can help shed a little light on the bigger picture -- as a regular donor - I've donated 9 Gals of whole blood, one pint at a time, and switched to apheresis in Sept at their request - they can get 3 units of platelets from me every week or two instead of 1 unit every 8 weeks. If you donate red blood cells, it takes 8 weeks to rebuild your supply. My cardiologist and I discussed it - I was on Plavix - we agreed I could go off it. Also off aspirin 72 hours before donating.(platelets)

There are several questions about sexual activity, as well as travel abroad, exposure to diseases, meds you might be on. Man on Man sex is only one question of many. They have to screen out all people w/ possible issues. The blood tests, while good, aren't 100%, so they can't just screen your blood by the test and go for it. They rely on people being honest.

Are you feeling well today?
Have/ever had a bleeding disorder?
Have/ever had a heart problem (e.g. Heart Attack, Angioplasty) - if at least 6 mos since and ok'd by doc, you can donate - as long as meet drug deferral period issues.

Have you ever had sex with someone who has taken drugs not prescribed by a doctor by needle? (or have you taken drugs by needle not Rx by Doc . . .)
Ever been to Africa or had sex with someone from Africa?
If you are a male have you ever had sex, even once, with another male since 1977.
(Oral, Anal)
Have you ever paid to have sex (or been paid to have) . . .
Human Growth Hormone, Insulin from Beef, dura matter transplant, surgery in past . . . including oral surgery.
Currently taking anti-biotics for an infection? (OK if you're taking a maintenance anti-biotic to prevent an issue and your currently symptom free - e.g. my daughter had Kidney "backsplash" when she was younger, was susceptible to urinary tract infections, so they put her on a maintenance anti-biotic for several years while they waited to see if she would outgrow the condition, or need surgery to correct. She outgrew it.

Come in contact w/ someone who's had a smallpox vaccine w/in the past year?
Had or come in contact w/anyone w/hepatitis?

Donate whole blood, platelets, plasma in past 8 weeks - I answer yes, then platelets and last donation 7-14 days ago OK. double reds past 16 weeks?
Served in the military/been a dependent of someone in military and been in . . .

Yes, it all stems from way back then - also why it's supposed to be illegal to sell your blood, anymore. Guess not in all states, based on post above. They used to process in large batches for economies of scale - then they discovered they ruined a lot of blood -- have gone to single lot, single use needle donations/processing.

I don't believe the regs are the Red Crosses, I believe they come from the NIH or FDA -- which oversees blood products like other prescription medications. They are required to ask the questions to try to make sure the blood supply is as safe as humanly possible. Yes, it costs them a lot of potential donors. They HAVE revised SOME of the rules - notably the UK/European travel time frames.

Our local regional center was fined $6M several years ago - apparently due to paperwork controls. It had nothing to do with the way they handled the blood, itself. They are very serious. You also have to have an iron level of 12.5 (mm hg?) or greater to make sure your aren't anemic.

Oh, yeah, hemophilia?
Been in Juvenile or regular detention center for more than 24 hours?
Had a tatoo in past year?
Accidental Needle Stick?
Come in contact with someone else's blood?

So, it's not just gay men who have been sexually active that they are screening out. There are a lot of other people in the same boat. The goal is to ensure safe blood. I'm sorry they haven't come up with a way to be more inclusive, too, but again, I sincerely think the regs came down from the Fed.

they ask if you are gay because you have a high chance of passing on the HIV virus.

Do they ask if you're black because the rate of AIDS is higher in the black community than that of other populations. No. And they shouldn't. Because they ask actual questions about your sex practice to ensure realistic answers.

I understand askign about sexuality in the 80s. They didn't know how things worked then. But now they need to cut the shit and drop the anti-gay blood ban. As far as I'm concerned donating blood is just fine, but the reality is we should be far more vocal about it.

They ask question about behaviors, geographies, etc. that have contributed to unsafe blood in the past. Not Just Gay Men.

Should they have a way of asking questions that might allow more donors, I think so, too. Send a letter to you Senator and Congressperson -- I think the regs are Federally mandated.

maybe 20 years ago - okay 25 - you could prolly slip some HIV infected blood into the system - but it's that highly unlikely today??

I've donated prolly in the range of gallons over the years - never really kept track - and i could answer all the questions truthfully -- but what pisses me off bout the system -- is that the answers to those questions are the same -- every fucking time i would go -- soo why do they insist on asking them over and over and over -
When i was working - I would even get crap from my boss because the process took sooooo long -- when the actual blood letting was pretty quick--

and now that i have a ....ummm... medical issue..... i can give blood -- but -- specialist says it's okay - BUT they (ARC) don't want it -- even tho I have a semi-scarce type that they sometimes put out a special call for !!

so yeah - fuck them -- I'm done giving!!

I knew nothing of this! Disgusting. Another chain reaction due the HIV/AIDS outbreak blamed on us.

Don't bother going out of your way to donate blood unless they have a shortage of your blood type, you have a very rare blood type or someone you know needs it and they don't have it (you know like on TV when one of their friends gets shot and everybody runs in with their sleeve rolled up and a serious look on their face)

As for organs, I think it is worth the lie.

DonQuixote brings up a good point, they're not only asking questions about gay men, but about sexuality in general. Sure there could be things changed, but its nothing to go wack about and protest....
