Is it EVIL to wish the death of someone?

wishing harm to someone is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die. all it does is kill your soul.

I could never wish death on someone so, in my humble opionion, I believe it is evil. Having said that I do wish some people could feel the pain (and not the good stuff  ) they've inflicted on others

The ignorant comments written in the Steve Irwin thread just showed what type of a classless, ill mannered person wrote those words. Its fine to have those feelings, since we all have a right to our opinions. But to express them in a thread that is clearly meant to allow people to show their sympathy and mourn his loss is just despicable. In this world where we all preach about the right to voice our opinions, we have some who forget that there are also times when it is proper to remain silent.

Well said! I could not agree more.

Yes it is evil to wish death upon someone

in vino veritas. . . .

Can't you see the similarity between the wish and the fantasy? Hell, yes, I wish Cheney, Rumsfeld, Limbaugh, et al. were dead. In fact, I think the proof against the existence of God is that people like Anne Coulter--and to go back a generation or two Adolph Hitler--walk the earth is the proof of a non-existent or a malevolent God.

Wish away, friends. There is no karma that will exact revenge on you for hating and wishing evil people dead. Now, if you have the power (which I wish I had) to strike them dead, that is a different matter. How is wishing for $1,000,000 and the death of some son of a bitch different? You'll get neither. I think at the root of all this is the fear that if I wish George Bush dead, God might get me instead. Makes me want to scream! Fellow atheists--arise!

To wish or think a person dead is wrong on many planes. It speaks of a problem recognized without a known viable solution. Find the solution, stop wasting time wishing. It speaks of festering hatred or prejudice that will not be countered by logic or intellect. Learn, understand, reason and counter that stupidity. It speaks of apathy to do constructive activity of responding with a better answer of discounting life as meaningless.

As said above by another, it is a poison you drink thinking it will hurt another.

One of the replies on this thread scared me more than any wish could ever do ... It was the combined voices of Hitler, Bundey, and Dahmer as the author seems to have NO spiritual feelings or guilt whatsoever ..

i just really have a hard time swallowing the concept of "evil," as in Bush's "Axis of Evil."

okay, maybe that's not the best example

evil, to me, implies something supernatural - something biblical (or other-holy-textual), beyond the scope of mere humans alone. I think the use of that term spares us mere humans from culpability. (The devil made me do it) A belief in evil seems, to me, to be a way of shrugging off the personal, human, responsibility of others' actions, and, ultimately, our own.

immoral, on the other hand, from the word "more," (with two sylabbles) i assume...

mores and morals are socially determined; so it is only appropriate to seek the opinions of your society.

in humility i would suggest that the importance of my opinion dwindles in such a crowd, but really it's because i don't really think you are being immoral right now; to me, clashing against my morality is such an ugly experience that i don't wish to draw attention to the potential for it, until it actually happens.

personally, yes, i found the attacks in the irwin thread immoral. but before i would say that, i would tend to say they were (at best) unreasoned and (at MY worst) rude or stupid.

I do believe that there is evil in this world, but we sometimes call it by other names, be it socio-path or whatever. I am not too sure that someone who wishes death or something bad to happen to another is necessarily evil, but I do know that it is not a character trait that I would like in another and probably would not have them in my life as a friend or any other type of relationship. Now, if a person were to promote and encourage the death or harm of another person, that takes it to a whole new level for me, and I would say that it was immoral.

I just find it dismaying and rather disheartening to hear people express such desires. If it is okay to rejoice in the death of someone for something such as what Steve Irwin did to achieve what he thought was an education of people and to preserve the animals and thier habitats, then how can we condemn those who protest funerals of soldiers or of known gay men who have died at the hands of another or due to AIDS? I have increasingly come to the conclusion that extremists, in whatever cause they may believe in, do more harm than good for thier own causes and diminish the human race with these harmeful thoughts and behaviours.

I don't think that he deserved to die. With that being said it is not surprising that he did die while pursuing his passion in that what he did was inherently dangerous. It is still a shame that he died so young and that his work really is not completed. I would say that this could be compared to the deaths of the 71 journalists who have died covering the Iraq War. It is sad and unnecessary that they are gone, but not surprising considering the inherent danger of being in a war zone.

The type of people that I would wish death upon, are people who have 'destroyed' peoples lives, or really screwed some one over in a negative way. Which would be, murders, pedophiles, rapists, etc.

I am of the opinion that these types of people suffer more if they live and are incarcerated rather than being released from thier punishment of the loss of freedom. To be honest, from my experience of being a prison guard, these types of people do not live a very safe or comfortable life. Just look at the deaths of Jeffrey Dahlmer or the Catholic Priest Father John Geoghan. I saw many pedophiles who were serving thier time in Protective Segregation and were not allowed to mingle with the general population. They were fed in their cells and the one hour that they had for recreation was spent in a 6 foot by 12 foot fenced in dog run. They were in constant fear for thier lives. Rapists did not fare much better I might add.

God I hope not.

And I hope it's not too wrong to wish SEVERAL people death.

I think it's only evil if you follow through on your wish or do something to get the wheels in motion to see the person die.

We've all had times when we just wished someone would drop dead, and thankfully in most cases they don't.

Death is a mystery that I don't want to start investigating for a long time. Because I don't know whether we really have out-of-mind consciouses or not, I find myself not able to really curse someone else to have a faster brush-in with the age-old case of the afterlife.

Evil? Not necessarily. Cruel? Yes, unbelievably so.

My stance is everyone deserves to keep their lives unless they're one of the miserable sadists crawling amongst us on Earth that unfairly forced the answer to the mystery of death upon another, intentionally. Of course it can get even more complicated, but that's a different exploration altogether.
