Is it safe for us to honey moon in Jamaica?

I would have to agree with the others, Jamaica is NOT safe. A few years ago the #1 song in Jamaica was about setting gay people on fire. Just being suspected of being gay is dangerous. There are other Caribbean islands that are far better, Aruba is great and you shouldn't have any problems, I never have. Key West is a gay mecca, you won't need a passport. Relevant to the topic, Keon West (social psychologist), writes in his article in the Guardian about the sources of homophobia in Jamaica. I found the article because Jamaica doesn't have a reputation as an overly religious culture. The 2001 census counted 64% Christian, but primarily Protestant denominations like Church of God and Seventh Day Adventist, neither of which is known for politically active Fundamentalism.

West concludes that the homophobia is indicated by affiliation with dancehalls and dancehall music, a vocal and strongly anti-gay focus in Jamaica. The anger is much more anti-male homosexual, and has the familiar aspect of being rooted in the definition of masculinity that is tough and anti-feminist.

The research supports the bias that I have in imputing homophobia to be a sort of traditionalist and uneducated relic of masculinity that doesn't need Christianity, Islam, or even monotheism to be virulent. It needs large uneducated populations that hold to old definitions of masculinity and are inherently threatened by male homosexuality. If you look at Neil's map, the swath sweeps clean across the poverty belt from Africa to the Mideast to India, with the notable exception of South America and Central America.

Whereas religion becomes the focal point in the West for homophobia, the real driver is likely poverty and ignorance coupled with a cultural definition of male as macho, as the map shows in color. It is interesting to note the poverty in SE Asia and China doesn't share the same cultural definition of masculinity, yet are highly religious countries.

As always Jason's post carries great detail. Mine just says don't go there on honeymoon and show public affection towards each other, it will end badly.

As others have said, there are plenty of gay friendly places to go and have a great time.

I am guessing the OP is not from Jamaica I would say that if you go to Jamaica STAY at the hotel not joking extremely serious. I also say use common sense and caution. DO NOT show any affection with your partner in public I am not joking. You can be charged I believe with sodomy there. Also I wonder if the OP pays attention to the news? Jamaica is an extremely homophobic country. Why would anyone who is gay from the west want to go there? Honestly stay in the west go honeymoon in a developed nation that has a good gay rights record. One of the mistakes gay tourists make is not doing their homework prior to a vacation. I remember a few years ago two gay men were arrested for having anal sex in plain sight on a cruise ship close to Grenada I think. The gay men were shocked they got arrested. But when you go to a foreign nation you got to follow their rules.

Well, the guy I work with just honeymooned there. He said the resorts are owned by Americans. And it is much cheaper than, say, Hawaii with all the same benefits.

Online reviews say Sandals seem to accept gay couples just fine.

What about Puerto Rico? Do they have similar conditions and resorts? Their attitude any better?

Bahamas looks really expensive.
 
I think Jason's post is right on. Even in the west there is the tendency for gay men to be seen as less than manly.
I've heard it myself.

There are a lot of men the world over who are insecure in their own masculinity and feel threatened by gay men, especially by those who refuse to cower and hide.

Jamaica is like most American urban areas. As long as you stay in certain areas, you'll be fine. There are neighborhoods where even the locals don't go (in American cities and in Jamaican cities). As long as you're in the tourist areas (which are the prettier and cleaner areas), you'll be fine.

Now that's a different question. The answer is "hell no". There are some more liberal areas in Negril but for the price, there are much better places other than Jamaica where you can go and not be limited on your choices of what to do and where to go.

Those who are pointing out that Jamaica is one of the most homophobic places in this hemisphere are on the money. In no public place will you be safe if you are openly affectionate with another man.

Stop being so fucking cheap.

If this is a honeymoon, it is the only one you should have...so choose the place the two of you would love to go to the most and make it memorable.

If you just want to lock yourselves into an American beach compound somewhere, then choose the right resort.

If you actually want to do some travelling and exploring while you are there, then choose it for those reasons.

Most people have an ideal regarding society's rules. Those who break them, in whichever particular view, must be punished.

To conservatives, we are to be punished. To us, conservatives must be punished, fined, whatever.

Of course the two are not equal just because they operate the same way, it just explains why some violent homophobes act out.
 
Safe to vacation and go on tours and shop and go to the bars if you don't mention you're a couple. Yes.

Safe to show PDA outside your hotel, walk around very late night, flash cash around. No.
 
Go to Puerta Vallarta ---beautiful place great people lot's to do---and totally gay friendly. Was there this winter and it was great.
Not to mention the exchange rate is off the chart great.
Went to fancy Japanese restaurant had every course--drank--dessert etc---for two---came to $77 on my Amex card---
Been to Puerto Rico a million times and while I love it ---it's not cheap and in a lot of trouble now.

Some people grew up swimming in money, so they can't fathom the idea that money doesn't grow on trees. They can't imagine worrying about paying for rent, how they're going to buy groceries or pay utilities, etc. because they always got everything they ever wanted on a silver platter.
