Not that I want to turn them on at night now... but since the weather is mild.. I'm thinking of putting them up. I Usually do this Dec 1st but wondered if it was too early yet?

You mean you took them down last year?

do you mean...

people in your neighborhood take them down?

seriously...

don't people usually put lights up the day after thanksgiving? it gives the straight men something to do while the gay men and straight women shop.

I think it's an okay thing to do...when I was living in Ontario we had to put them up before the first snowfall hit. Not really the excuse you can use in Vancouver, maybe you can put them up earlier to avoid the bloody rain and windstorms that usually arrive in November? ;)

i thought the christian tradition was to leave the decorations up until after the twelvth night celebration.

is that not something done anymore?

I'd rather do it while it's warm than go out there and freeze my ass off in the middle of December.

Typically I don't do stuff like put the tree up until after Thanksgiving. But if Thanksgiving is at my house (we all kinda take turns on whose house Thanksgiving will be at each year) I'll go ahead and put it up cuz it kinda gives off that whole holiday-type atmosphere while everyone is stuffing turkey and drinking nasty eggnog.

But, like a couple of the others said, there are people in my neighborhood that never even take them down.

My neighbors always put their lights up early, to avoid the bad weather, but don't turn them on until after Thanksgiving.

Nope - put 'em up now in case it gets really cold and snowy. Just don't switch them on until Dec 1

You should not hang them until after Sadam.

I saw on the main page the link to this... saying "Is it too early to hang..."
I thought this was a political, on topic post. I prefer christmas, though. More cheerful, less morbid.

Yes, hang them now, but do not turn them on. You look silly advertising christmas before Coke. Christmas is entirely owned by coke.

Generally speaking anything Christmas-ish before Thanksgiving is kind of tacky for me, but I can understand people wanting to start early while they have time. I will gladly take people putting up their lights early rather than look at them still up in March.

Speaking of too early, I did recieve my first Christmas card in the mail....now that is way to early.

See this is why I was confused about myself for soo long.

I didn't want to go shop. I wanted to put up lights.

Oh... the confusion! ](*,)

Put up the Thanksgiving lights first.

I always put ours up the weekend before Thanksgiving and start turning them on Thanksgiving night.

Wow. I was just at the Post Office and the car in front of mine was stuffing green colored envelopes in the mail box. If they were Christmas cards, they're just a tad too early I'd say. I like to put mine in the mail by the first weekend of December. :xmas:

I honestly start putting them up sometimes the end of october or beginning of november depending on the weather. I like to put them up when the weather is nice. I always turn them on Thanksgiving night, kinda of a kick start to the holidays.

As a general rule: Holiday decorating can be done at anytime after Halloween. Decorations should be taken down within the first week of January at the latest.

Some people are superstitious and believe that decorations should not be up after New Year's Eve. Others believe they should not be taken down until after the new year arrives.

Merchants would like nothing better than for you to buy the crap all fucking year.

Your local power company would prefer that you leave your lights on 24/7/365 days a year. It helps their stocks.

I prefer option 3: combine the holidays "Halloween" and "Protestant Christmas" into one. Create a display featuring a bloody sleigh and reindeer crash site marked by a large lit crucifix.

This decor can be displayed as early as October 1st!

Decorations go up after Thanksgiving, and stay up until Epiphany (January 6th).

I don't do outside lights. 'though. I'd fall off the ladder and break something.

My partner and I started putting up our Christmas decorations today. We need to start this early as we always go to Phoenix for 2 weeks for the Thanksgiving Holiday and when we get back home it will the November 29th. We do not turn the light on until the 1st of December
