Is Legacy news media about to die a slow death?

Meanwhile, trouble in the Murdoch world. Seems like Lachlan and Rupert want to keep the future of the company leaning fascist by changing the terms of the trust to exclude the other children.

Sounds like an episode of Succession.

Well the judge wasn't buying it. For now.

If the Murdoch empire control is spread out over all of them, it will be harder to keep them all pulling in one direction if any one of the other kids develops a conscience or if they decide to collectively challenge Lachlan's supremacy.

At any rate, any day now, Hell will reclaim Rupert Murdoch and then for better or worse, another legacy media empire will likely decline as they always seem to with the second and third generation.

It's just not that complicated, really.

Ted Turner started this mania with CNN and WTBS and the idea that TV could broadcast around the clock, ostensibly with sometthing important. CNN rattled away pointlessly for years, trying to appeal to stock watchers, storm watchers, crime watchers, sports watchers, tech watchers, and on and on.

The Worry Channel was only slighly more focused (The Weather Channel).

Viewers soon learned there wasn't anything important worth repeating every five minutes. It was blather, pure blather.

The, the old main networks amped up their evening news with handsome men, sexy women, and lots of short, blippy nothing, without pretending to answer the basic questions of journalism, and with the same old inordinate focus on NYC, random middle-classed white women disappearing, and whatever puffed their sponsors (anyone notice a shit-ton of coverage of the United CEO execution, FAR out of scale with public interest or sympathy? The big pharma are almost the exclusive sponsors of the big network news shows and they are most certainly co-conspirators with the insurance companies and the medical professions to bleed the citizens dry.)

The old people who believed news was important and trustworthy are passing, and the internet users are displacing them.

And watchers are FATIGUED. There has been this breathless hype before Trump was elected the first time, all through his term, and all since, and now that he is back in, NONE of it made a damned bit of difference. INFORMING the public doesn't make it wiser.

And for the intelligent who tried to find succor in like company on PBS, NPR, MSNBC, etc., they are just as sick as everyone else of everything being aboutt Trump 24/7. There is precious little anyone will do to stop MOST of his appointments, so why tune in for the next four years and hear half-stories of hype and fret when an actutal INSURRECTION wasn't enough to keep him out?

Fuck the news. Fuck TV. Fuck the supposed 5th Estate. And fuck the drivel that they squeak out of their asses and tell us we should care about.

Prediction: Mr. Mangione will be convicted, but his example will inspire copycats. The two-party system has failed tot serve the working class, no matter who got elected, and we're at a point of anarchy.

Worse is coming, and it isn't all going to be from MAGA.

Regardless of the CEO's innocence or corruption, his company does great harm, and at some point, you can't teach kids that "patriots" tarred and feathered Brit tax men in order to protect the rich Boston merchants, and not send the message that when Americans get fed up, fighting back violently is just.

We'll see.

I haven't watched television news in decades and stopped listening to NPR in the early years of the Trump administration when I grew tired of the obvious lies. My only exposure to CNN, MSNBC, Fox and the other networks is on television monitors at my gym and in airport lounges. From the headlines and closed captions I see, it would seem that much of the time they're looking for ways to make their targeted audience angry. Forget about looking for the truth.

QED.

A day after Trump and George Stephanopoulos were ordered to appear for depositions, they settled the case.

ABC has agreed to make a $15 million contribution to Trump presidential museum/foundation

and air an apology for mischaracterizing the E. Jean Carroll verdict.

So he signed it "President Donald J Trump" - he is NOT yet the president!

They always hold the title of their highest position. Hillary is Secretary Clinton, Bill is President Clinton and so on.

I know that is how they are addressed - but seeing a document signed as "President" gives it a perception of authority.

More on the feuding inside the Murdoch family compound.

I had forgotten that another expensive case is coming to trial in January, as Prince Harry and Fox go to the mat.

Also, the average age of cable viewers and particularly FOX is mid sixties. With Trump at the helm, and likely looking to shift his prouncements to his own platform, what will keep MAGATS watching? For a little while they will be breathelssly fapping away to pics of brown people being rounded up and armed forces being turned on the people they have been told to hate, but with a compliant senate, congress and SC as well as the thieves running the executive branch, the momentum won't be on their side in the media.

I suppose the war on Canada and Mexico will keep eyeballs tuned to FOX for awhile, but even that will start to get old quickly.

Speaking of cable news ratings, “Morning Joe” hit a 17-year-low in the advertiser coveted 25-54 demo on Monday, averaging only 38K viewers. Oof.

They are done. That is more like local news audience numbers.

Seen today:

MSM’s salivating over having four years of this chaotic BS—exactly why they pushed Shitler’s candidacy. They’ll whine about Shitler’s inept, controversial madness publicly, but toast it privately bc it gets clicks, good ratings & drives good profits.
Never at a loss for “Breaking News!”

Shame on them.

I think CNN is trying to commit suicide. I used to watch CNN all the time, and I am so sad and disappointed at the turn they have made. Recently, the CNN website has become useless. There are so many stories I click on and get paywalled. That never used to happen. They're getting desperate. There's no better way to drive away users than to paywall your articles when people can find the exact same information from Google in a few clicks.

Paywalls will indeed be the death of legacy media, particularly television, where the whole idea is selling advertising to keep the eyeballs on the tube. And no one beilieves the bullshit anymore about how cable was supposed to be an ad free alternative.

But I never ever believed that sane people would give Musk 8 bucks a month to sit in a toilet bowl with him and his far right wing buddies and Kremlin trolls....but a lot of people have been.

CNN is more or less in a death spiral since 2020 and so apparently is MSNBC whose head is somehow determined that they need to reach out to the conservative audience...thereby ensuring that their shows and hosts will be abandoned by the liberals who have no interest in having thier intelligence insulted by CNN and of course FAUX. The JOE and MKA fiasco is a good example of viewer flight from media whose role apparently will be to soft peddle the transformation of the US into a non-democratic oligarchy while using their bullhorn to amplify every concocted scandal about the Bidens, trans people in sports, drag queens and any other sensational tabloid subject that will keep viewers riled up and divided.

It wasn't that long ago that I learned that Joe and Mika are actually married. I guess everyone else knew, but it surprised me. Doesn't matter, I guess.

I do still watch CNN and Morning Joe in the morning, switching between commercials. Mostly, I think they're worth watching despite the "both sides" angle. CNN has become far worse than MSNBC. CNN almost always has some reich-wing, lying a-hole on. Despite the Mika and Joe fiasco, I don't see too much of it on MSNBC. Also, I expect a number of viewers to come back after the holidays as we get closer to the inauguration. People are just exhausted and demoralized, and need a long break. Eventually, I think ratings will pick up again.

Additionally, I watch David Pakman on YouTube in the mornings. He isn't a news show, but a commentator and opinion show. He is definitely left, but not wacko left. I find him very reasonable, rational, and sensible in his approach, very good at explaining, and not beholden to corporate media. David debunks a ton of Trump and republican lies. I like him.

The story about why they got married is as interesting as the sudden marriage. Joe and Mike both divorced their spouses. Then they got a call from Jared saying, "Call the President. He wants to help you get rid of a story that the National Enquirer plans to run about your relationship". Joe and Mike returned from a vacation and told them story on "Morning Joe" and announced that they were engaged, effectively scooping the Enquirer and getting rid of Trump's blackmail attempt.

It was an earlier story that presaged the Stormy Daniels/Karen McDougal story about Trump nefarious dealings with the National Enquirier.
