I think it's at least partially nurture, but possibly also nature. It's mimetic of cunnilingus, so it could be the natural extension of putting a penis up there like a vagina: licking it like a vagina. I can also see how it could happen in nature. I've seen cats toy around with each other's buttholes before sex, and I'd be willing to wager that if you watched chimpanzees (with their differently-shaped hips that point the vagina backwards) enough, you'd catch them doing it. There is definitely the vague pheromone-y smell down there, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were an evolved behavior, too.

Good rimming is simply a matter of common sense.
