It used to be that overweight guys were mirth-and-girth and hairy guys were bears.
Now it seems overweight smooth or little hair guys are calling themselves bears. When did chubby guys start calling themselves bears? I'll see guys that are fat & have very little hair, calling themself a 'bear'. I don't think they are a bear, because they don't have enough hair (for me) to be considered a 'bear'. is this wrong? Should they be told, you aren't a bear at all?

It's all so blurred now; you have to ask, are you a buffet bear or a muscle bear?

I'm sure this will send some into a tizzy, but anyone else notice this too?

yeah they are wrong....

they arent bears they are chubs.. bears need to be masculine (looking) and hairy... either heavy facial hair or chest/body hair....

a lot of people refer to themselves as twinks too when they obviously aren't

Agreed. I've seen quite a few guys that are hairless calling themselves bears. I don't say they are wrong though, why ruin the lie they have let themselves believe?

i think you can call yourself whatever you want, otherwise its just a sorority for old fat hairy men. (i dont consider myself a bear btw...far from it lol)

how about if your smooth and have a beard? I don't think that is a bear either...

There are people who consider a clean shaven guy with chest hair a bear, but that's not my opinion.

I define a bear as a man with facial hair (and not just 5 days stubbles). Chest hair isn't a requirement and the body shape doesn't matter, as long as he is IN shape (athletic thin/muscled/broad shoulders and beer belly etc.).

When I think of a "bear", I think of a hairy guy with a beer gut. If a person is smooth, I don't think of him as a bear.

I think nowadays "bear" refers more to a matter of "taste," "preferred types" more than the actual physical description.

You're a bear if you call yourself a bear.

Even in this thread we have multiple variations on what being a "bear" even is. Trying to pigeonhole every single gay man into a nice neat category that everyone can agree on is a losing game. And a pointless one.

BINGO! DING DING DING!

There are plenty of overweight guys, but if you are completely smooth you're just better off calling them a Chub or Superchub. Bears will come in all shapes and sizes. They have a sub category to those.

Muscle Bear
Polar Bear
Panda Bear
Grizzly Bear
Bear
Otter
Wolves

The definitions are pretty slack. A "Bear" should be big (chub or muscled) and hairy. Still I might see a chub with hardly any body hair but with a goatee and they'll look like a cuddly bear to me too. So I can see why there's some confusion about the terms.
