I'm trying to watch what I eat alot more. One of the things I love is sushi. I buy it at the grocery store. I usually buy the California roll (white rice and seaweed wrapped w/cucumber,avocado,& crab meat)

Question: Is this fatty? I mean, I was thinking on having sushi on days I skip a salad for lunch or dinner. Anyone know? Thanks!

Sushi is not at all fatty.

If you wait long enough in this thread, I am sure somebody, courtesy of either Google or Wikipedia, will give you the exact calorific breakdown of sushi, but the answer will remain largely unchanged.

Thanks! No need for that to be posted. I looked it up on Google and couldn't really get a straight answer to my question. Its the white rice that sort of makes me question it. I hear brown rice is better, but my grocery store has nevr made it with brown rice. Thanks again!

Hey thanks! I didn't know that. I also like the sushi with the strips of raw fish like tuna and salmon. It usually costs more so I don't but it as often. I'm not eating it every day, more like 3 times a week or so. Thanks again for the info!

FWIW, there seem to be two conflicting memes regarding what's "fattening" -- starches/sugars vs. fat. If the former, then suhsi rolls probably don't provide a great protein-to-starch ratio. If the latter, then you should be in the clear.

You are speaking of Nigiri, and it's fabulous. I love sushi, and could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and have before! haha! My typical sushi order goes something like this:

1. Miso Soup
2. Seaweed Salad (Very tasty, and good for you too)
3. Nigiri, usually 2-3 pieces of Salmon, Tuna and Yellowtail.
4. Some sort of a roll, I usually like a Yami Yami roll, which is basically tuna and some other stuff, with a bit of creme cheese, and then the whole roll is flash fried so the outside is crispy, then it comes with a delectable sauce for dipping.

YUMMMM!!!!!!!!!!

Same as mine! Except I get salmon handroll and a California roll instead of your #4. ..|

`Depends on what you mean by Fatty. The bulk of sushi is rice. As you SHOULD know, rice turns into sugar before its all said and done. You figure it out.

Hey Romantico...

Do you mean fatty or fattening? Its the same only different I guess...

Anything with deep sea fish will be fatty... good fat mind you... but still fattening (its amazing that people can think that good fats dont count but fats are fats)... those styles without will have less fat.

However rice and white rice in particular is high in carbs... so it will be fattening...

Compared to a simple garden salad any style of "sushi" would contain considerably more calories than that - so if thats your concern tread carefully and watch your portions... having said that if you are eating a salad only you are probably missing out on vital protein which can help reduce weight and build muscle...

Its all a little confusing really.... ;)

i was of the mind that sushi was about the healthiest shit you could eat.

Too much fish is bad for you. I think that's only insane amounts because of the mercury though.

Tonight sounds like a good night for seaweed salad!
