What is meant by inspiration here is guidance. The bee is guided to make its home in the mountains, in trees and in structures erected by man. The bee's home is a solid structure, with its hexagonal shapes and interlocking forms there is no looseness in its combs. Then Allah decrees that the bee will have permission to eat from all fruits and to follow the ways which Allah has made easy for it, wherever it wants to go in the vast spaces of the wilderness, valleys and high mountains. Then each bee comes back to its hive without swerving to the right or left, it comes straight back to its home where its offspring and honey are. It makes wax from its wings, and regurgitates honey from its mouth, and lays eggs from its rear, then the next morning it goes out to the fields again.

There are several problems with this story.

The main problem is that it contradicts the Quran itself. In various places Muhammad admitted that he could not perform miracles. When asked for miracles his response was:

YUSUFALI: "Or thou have a house adorned with gold, or thou mount a ladder right into the skies. No, we shall not even believe in thy mounting until thou send down to us a book that we could read." Say: "Glory to my Lord! Am I aught but a man,- a messenger?"

The other problem with this claim is that this astronomical phenomenon should have been observed, not just in Mecca, but all over the world. Many nations have recorded even eclipses, why there is no mention of such a thing that for sure would have been the most amazing phenomenon?

The Indian history has recorded the name of one of their kings, Chakrawati Farmas, who is claimed to have witnessed the event of the splitting of the moon. An Indian historical manuscript [The Indian manuscript is kept in the India Office Library, London, which has reference number: Arabic, 2807, 152-173. It is quoted in the book “Muhammad Rasulullah,” by M. Hamidullah (2)] reports that: “There is a very old tradition in Malabar, South-West Coast of India, that Chakrawati Farmas, one of their kings had observed the splitting of the moon, the celebrated miracle of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) at Mecca, and learning, on inquiry, that there was a prediction of the coming of a Messenger of God from Arabia, he appointed his son as regent and set out to meet him. He embraced Islam at the hand of the Prophet, and when returning home, at the direction of the Prophet, he died at the port of Zafar. This information is in an Indian manuscript kept in the “India Office Library”, which contains several other details about King Chakrawati Farmas.

This story is of course another fabrication of Muslims. Muslims are fond of fabricating stories to attribute Miracles to their prophet. There is no mention of an Indian converting to Islam during the life of Muhammad in any version of Sira. One such ridiculous fabrication was the claim that the astronauts who landed on Moon heard the adhan (Muslim call to prayer) being chanted there. Muslims have based their entire faith on lies.

First of all there is no record that any King of India ever visited Muhammad. Secondly the splitting of Moon should have been observed by everyone all over the world and not just by one king.

Thirdly, assuming that this Indian king saw splitting of the Moon, how could he interpret this cosmic phenomenon as the sign that there has appeared a new prophet in Mecca? Muslims claim that Indian scriptures contain predictions about the coming of a messenger from Arabia. This is bull. There is no mention of Muhammad in any sacred book of any religion.

Note that the verses of the Quran and several hadiths that narrate this story do not claim that this so called miracle was performed by Muhammad. They simply state that people saw the Moon in two sides of the mount Hira and Muhammad said this is a sign from Allah to convince you that I am a prophet. Many Muslims are convinced that this phenomenon has indeed happened. They are shown these close-up pictures of the Moon taken by NASA as the evidence and as gullible as they naturally are, they believe without any hesitation. .

These are called Lunar Rilles. Rilles are long and deep gorges resembling canyons. A rille is typically several kilometers wide and hundreds of kilometers in length. Similar formations are found on a number of planets in the solar system, including Mars, Venus, and on a number of moons.

How these rilles are formed is still not known with certainty. Theories include erosion at some point in the stellar body's history, collapsed lava tubes, and tectonic activity/stresses.

There are three types of rilles on the lunar surface:

• * Sinuous rilles meander in a curved path like a river, and are commonly thought to be the remains of collapsed lava tubes or extinct lava flows. They usually begin at an extinct volcano, then meander and sometimes split as they are followed across the surface.
  
  * Arcuate rilles have a smooth curve and are found on the edges of the dark lunar maria. They are believed to form when the lava flows that created a mare cools, contracts, and sinks.
  
  * Straight rilles follow long, linear paths and are believed to be grabens. That is, a section of the crust that has sunk between two parallel faults. These can be readily identified when they pass through craters or mountain ranges.

Rilles can be found all over the lunar surface and they do not form a belt and therefore do not in anyway support the claim of Muslims that the Moon had been split asunder. Actually, what these four "corners" refer to are the points of the compass - north, south, east, and west. In reality, the Hebrew word has nothing to do with corners at all. In fact, the word kanaph refers to the wing or extremity of birds.15 The word is translated as a form of "wing" in nearly every instance.16 It is also used to refer to the wing of an army. However, it would sound rather strange to refer to the wings of the earth, so the English translators used the word "corners." Some of the newer translations use the word "quarters."17 It certainly has nothing to do with squares, but refers to the uttermost parts of the earth. By the way, this prophecy was fulfilled in 1948 with the establishment of the nation of Israel following nearly 2,000 years of dispersion. Jews from literally the uttermost parts of the earth were reunited in that new nation.

The expression four corner of the earth (vs. 12; cf. Job 37:3; Rev 7:1) do not reflect an ancient notion that the earth was flat and the shape of a square or rectangle. Deuteronomy 22:12 speaks of the four corners of a cloak, and Ezekiel 7:2 of the four corners of the land of Israel, but in neither case is it implied that the biblical writer thought that the cloak or the land of Israel was square or rectangular. This is simply an idiomatic expression meaning "entirety."4

Quite so. And it's not a scientific error, it's a matter of a different system of classification. Insisting that it's a scientific error is like insisting that all biologists were making scientific errors by not having more than the kingdoms of animals and plants -- the reality is that they just hadn't broken their classification system down into any more detail yet, and that's exactly what the situation is with the reference to rabbits.


BTW, that's an excellent bit of material about the "four corners of the earth". I recall translating that when I was taking ancient Hebrew, and we got translations ranging from "the four wings of the earth" to "the four tips of the earth" to "the four extremities of the earth".... Noting that in every case the word "earth" could be replaced with "land" and the translation be just as correct, we looked at other uses of the phrase "the four corners of", and found it used of -- as the article said -- a cloak and the land of Israel, and outside the Old Testament it is used in reference to a city, which was nowhere near square, and a vineyard; the word itself is used as we do of buildings, speaking of an east wing and a west wing, and even of a lake, speaking of the two ends.

This is just one very good example of the trouble in translating when the two languages have concepts that are not held in common. It shows that not merely are things lost in translation, but that things are often gained -- things that bring misunderstanding, but are often the best that can be done.
