  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Is the US the new Roman Empire?

Blustry hyperbole - if Canada were to attempt an invasion of the USA, they wouldn't last an hour.
And why would they?
The canucks are but sucklings at the teat of the US economy.

Trust you to totally miss the humour.

I would let them waltz right in to do it. Needs a new coat of paint anyway.

The difference between the Roman Empire and the USA is that the Romans were (for their day) a civilised and cultured society surrounded by barbarians. In the case of the modern USA, those positions are reversed.

:rotflmao:

Go tell that to the Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Syrians, Mesopotamians, Canaanites... the Roman Empire was an empire of barbarians gathered by one mightier barbarian people, and all the varnish of civilization they ever got was borrowed, much like in the case of the Americans (another "check"

).

In at least one thing do Americans truly differ from the Romans, as far as refinement goes: their literature is utter shite, let alone when compared with Roman one of the two "first centuries".

Alas and alack. We can only seem to attract the cast-off royals, don't-cha-know?

We'll never amount to anything without some sparkly crowns.

Actually, that is it: so far, the USA has been made up of the excess of europeanness that Europe itself could not contain, and now the goody-goody part of the country is horrified to discover that it is bound to finally become something more genuine, more truly American, through the means of that part they always despised... at the expense of renouncing to the dream of becoming, mainly through the genetics, laws, religion, cultural shreds and one language from old Europe, some improved version of all that the rest of the world ever was until about 1900.
The rest of the country which takes itself not to be in that hard up position of both the aspiring redneck sans-culottes and the terrified aristodemocrats, will continue floating among that tempest, while believing they are the only ones with their feet firmly on the ground, convinced everything will turn for the better... as they believe that it always did.
