is the word "fag" considered inappropriate ?

I'm troubled when I hear or see us classifying each other in a way that says, "I'm gay but I'm not like those gay people over there." We are all just people deserving of the same respect and dignity regardless of mannerisms or the way we dress or talk.

I have been both a banker and a clergyman and have dressed most of my life with a suit or a clergy collar. Usually people see me on the street and call me 'father' or they see me out with my grandkids and think 'grandpa.' I'm a lot of things and proud to be who I am. I don't hide any of it.

When I first came out, I was troubled by many of the words that are used to refer to gay people. I learned some time ago that you take away people's power to offend by appropriating certain words. So if someone asks me, "What are you, a faggot?" I respond saying, "Yes, and proud of it."
