conventional polling puts gays at 8% of the population but i think it's way more than that. look at all the top influencers for "straight" guys, all young, all nice bodies, all (more or less) good looking. these are man-crushes.

The problem is where the polls are taken, how broad the sampling is, and the end use of the polling data.

And it always comes down to how people 'identify'. Vast swathes of the homo population, even though they may have only been exclusively involved homosexual sex are so quick to identify as bisexual.

There are a variety of studies now that put the homo rate at about 10%, but I think it is likely more around the 8% or even less..

I've been in rooms and even parties with men who identify as straight and every single one of em would suck a dick at the drop of a dime. I would have to guestimate 20% AT LEAST.

90% of men say they are not gay when asked. About half of those are sucking dick behind closed doors.
Again...if the question was posed as to where they would rate themselves on a scale of bisexuality...the numbers would be different.

But getting people to admit that they are exclusively homo is a pretty tall order.

We're not talking about admitting, if there's nothing else you can count on men to do you can count on them lying.

25% according to the boffins who track and control diseases.

Yeah, but that includes B and Q (and extremely flexible term these days, it seems) as well as L and G, let along Ts, who can be L or G or B or Q.

And it's high school students. For a certain subset of people under 35 or 40, belonging to a marginalized group is social capital. So people will want to claim some of that capital, and it's easier to decide that you're LGBTQ than to decide you're Black or Latinx Hispanic or whatever.

(Do I need to stress that I'm talking about a certain subset and not everyone?)

Younger students say 'non-binary' is a WONDERFUL word for a WONDERFUL experience!

Children are immeasurably safer watching an inclusive episode of Transformers than they are with Pastor McTouchesalot. This is why I stay away from religion, the self-loathing it imposes on gay men, the mental gymnastics to make "regular gays" better than "weird nonconventional/nonbinary gays" are sad to watch.

Is it just me or does Grimshaw seem obsessed about trans and non-binary people...

But yeah, as I alluded to above and as explained by LovemyPeppermill, if the question is how many people identify as exclusively homo, it will be a lot fewer than those who see themselves somewhere on a spectrum.

And given that high school years are the time for awakening of sexual awareness and a lot of same sex experimentation, it is not surprising that so many would not slot themselves into a role at this stage.

I do know that high school kids, depending on the school, seem to feel a lot more freedom to try on different identities as they mature into young adults, without the repressive pressures many of us grew up with. Good on them.

Of course they are. Their good-looking, nice young bodies make them influential.

That is the prime requirement of any sort of influencer. That is human nature.
