Is there a song that can make you cry?

And even though the moment passed me by
I still can't turn away
Cause all the dreams you never thought you'd lose
Get tossed along the way

Name
by Goo Goo Dolls

And now we're grown up orphans
That never knew their name
We don't belong to no one, that's a shame...

But you can hide beside me
Maybe for a awhile?
And I won't tell no one your name

Sarah McLachlan - Fallen

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xyGOeG8vdo[/ame]

Hey braex, it was your Sarah McLachlan entry that reminded me of Iris, because they both did the music for the film City Of Angels with Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage. That was a sad picture.

Here's another Goo Goo Dolls song that has a lot of weight too.
Black Balloon...It's about losing someone to drug addiction.

A thousand other boys could never reach you
How could I have been the one?

I saw the world spin beneath you
And scatter like ice from the spoon that was your womb

Comin' down the world turned over and angels fall without you there
I go on as you get colder or are you someone's prayer?

pour my life into a paper cup
the ashtray's full and I'm spilling my guts
you wanna know am I still a slut?

For sentimental reasons, "Stolen" by Dashboard Confessional. But, I should emphasize, they're tears of joy. :)

Kettering by The Antlers

I wish that I had known in that first minute we met,
The unpayable debt that I owed you.
Because you'd been abused by that bone that refused you,
And you hired me to make up for that.

Walking in that room when you had tubes in your arms,
Those singing morphine alarms out of tune
Kept you sleeping and even, and I didn't believe them
When they called you a hurricane thunderclap.

When I was checking vitals I suggested a smile.
You didn't talk for awhile, you were freezing.
You said you hated my tone, it made you feel so alone,
And so you told me I ought to be leaving.

But something kept me standing by that hospital bed,
I should have quit but instead I took care of you.
You made me sleep and uneven, and I didn't believe them
When they told me that there was no saving you.

Back To Black by Amy Winehouse

He left no time to regret
Kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet

Me, My head high
And my tears dry
It all went out my guy

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her and I go back to us....

A great Rodgers & Hart song (Lorenz Hart was gay, you know), sung by one of the greatest singers who ever lived, at a time towards the end of her life when critics said, 'her voice is wrecked' (by a lifetime of booze and drug abuse).

With Ray Ellis and his Orchestra; trombone solo by JJ Johnson.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqaR0eKBXMc"]Glad to be Unhappy Billie Holiday[/ame]

^Billie Holiday is wonderful^

I have a couple songs to induct this evening.

First from Patty Loveless, Nothing But The Wheel
This song paints a haunting picture of what it's like to leave it all behind.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3ALWIsKBEI&feature=search"]The sky's the color now of polished steel[/ame]

And in the same vain is a song written by Melissa Etheridge.
You Can Sleep While I Drive...Here's a beautiful piece about having to beg someone for a chance at love. Etheridge's visual descriptions are simply brilliant.

I'll buy you boots down in Texas, a hat in New Orleans
And in the morning you can tell me your dreams
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_h11AdN34E&feature=av2e"]lover you're free/cant you get that with me?[/ame]
Come on baby, let's get out of this town
I got a full tank of gas with the top rolled down
If you won't take me with you
I'll go before the night is through
and baby, you can sleep while I drive

I'm not a crier, but there are a few songs that stir emotions for me:

"One" by U2 - Yes, Bono wrote it about the band having difficult times dealing with each other, but it has been re-interpreted by so many of us now.

"Candle in the Wind '97" by Elton John - The Princess Diana version that is still the best selling single of all time in the history of recorded music.

"Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M. - Is there an explanation necessary?

"At 17" by Janis Ian - My mother turned me on to this song. I think it's from 1975 or '74.

"Elton's Song" by Elton John - The first time I heard this song from EJ's 1981 CD "The Fox", I knew it was about realizing you were gay. The video proved this. I discovered this song while compiling an EJ song collection.

"Momma, Look Sharp" from the movie "1776" - The movie is about the creation of the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War. This song is about the young (teenage) soldiers who had to fight for our country and their mothers finding tham shot/dying on the battlefields.

"And I Am Telling You" by Jennifer Holliday or Jennifer Hudson - I know it's supposed to be more uplifting, but it just seems so emotionally strong to me.

"Get Here" by Oleta Adams - About a love who is far away.

Plus a few that have already been mentioned: "The Rose" - "Angel" (Sarah McLaughlin) - "I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton) - "Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny)" - "Goodbye to Love"

^That's a terrific list MJ, I know most of those songs, and Janis Ian's At 17 is truly haunting. Thank you sir^

Here's a rocker that yanks my chain.
Keep On Rockin' In The Free World by Neil Young
The second verse last four lines break my heart every time I hear them.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

poor little guy...
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdiCJUysIT0&feature=search"]toilet paper for the ozone layer[/ame]

and a bonus song...
Old Man By Neil Young
