Is There Life After Death?

If there is something like reincarnation after death, I am sure I will be reborn as a rat for I really have a bad kharma.

I don't like to think of "life after death"... though I do believe that the conscious individual continues in some other form. Individual consciousness is too strong, and too independent of the body, to die with it (I believe). Something of our will, our personality, even our memories will continue in some other form that we cannot fully comprehend while enmeshed in our bodies.

I do not believe in an afterlife that is a reward system for this life. That's just silly: the concept of eternal bliss or eternal pain is contrary to the order of the universe, which is that The Only Constant is Change. I don't understand why people want to think that God goes around changing His own rules on our behalf.

And you know, even if you knew for a full-on fact that there was another life after this one, that you would be reincarnated or go to heaven or whatever, that's no reason not to get the most joy, the most meaning, and the most information out of this life. That's just wasteful: "I'm going to swallow this chocolate truffle whole without tasting it because I have more in the box." What kind of sense does that make?

There is nothing after life.

The idea that we would be living again is just the result of an overinflated ego !

We're not that important in the universe.

A bit of humility would be becoming !

Will I continue to exist , in some form, after death?

Dear god, there's a question the Universe is going to have to grapple with!

Wasn't I enough in THIS LIFE!

I do believe in life after death cause I believe that God is fair.. So if someone has bad luck in this life, God will make it up for them in the afterlife.. I know that's no comfort to people who suffer but I believe that if someone suffers a lot in this life, God wouldn't just leave them like that, he/she/it will make it up for them later...

If this god is so fair and concerned with giving everyone an even break, why are huge numbers of the most devout people on the planet living in such shitty conditions? Most of the third world is full to bursting with piety and faith. Seems to me this god character is either a warped son of a bitch or perhaps he simply doesn't exist. (No perhaps about it in my opinion) and for a great many people, life just sucks.

Humans are just another species of life on this little blue planet.

You might as well ask if there is an afterlife for cats or elephants or anchovies or seagulls or crill or rattlesnakes or carrots. (Actually I'd quite like to take a peek at carrot heaven, just out of curiosity). Like Joe said, the only afterlife from us is the nutrients stored in our corpses which feed the next generation of whatever gets to munch on our dead selves.

The way I look at life and death is rather simple. Or, at least, I've simplified it so I don't have to type all day long every time somebody asks whether I believe in life after death.

First. I don't believe in anything. Belief requires faith.

The way I see life and death is that your body is a light bulb and your life is the light that the bulb gives off when certain electrical and chemical processes take place within it. When the bulb burns out, that's it. Your bulb was unique and although the same processes power all the other bulbs in the world, they are all individuals. And when they burn out, their light will never be seen again either.

It's easy to think there could be life after death but the reality is that there probably isn't.

Just because you have faith doesn't mean you have to believe in religion. You can put faith in other things; family, friends, whatever.
Now, I myself am an Atheist, so no God, Satan, Heaven or Hell. When I die I expect nothing much to happen, but I do sometimes wonder if there is something more after death. Does it end, or do you pick up somewhere else? Not quite like in reincarnation, it's hard to explain so I'm not going to bother at the moment since I just woke up a bit ago.

"Have you ever heard of Thule? That's the German name for the fabulous kingdom of the Greeks called Atlantis. Whether this kingdom ever existed is immaterial; the belief in it has existed since the dawn of history and beliefs motivate actions. In fact, you cannot understand a man's actions unless you understand his beliefs."
-Robert Anton Wilson, Illuminatus!

In other words, it matters not a lick if there is an afterlife or not, as we cannot know. But whether you believe or not, your life is perpetually and truly affected by the people who do choose to believe in one. Those effects are what require consideration -not the existence of an afterlife.

Guess I'll have to find that question out myself when I'm dead.

Just as not a single religious individual can prove beyond a doubt that there is life after death, no atheist can prove beyond a doubt that there isn't. It is the great unknown, and only getting there will answer the question for each of us.

Ah yes, the ultimate question. Can i live forever, even after i die? yes of course, and god will give beautiful land, virgins, and everything you've ever dreamed of. It's a common thing to want to live forever, either through afterlife, reincarnation, or in my case, wishing to become an android.

We're too self aware to accept reality. Think about it. Some people believe in pet heaven because they've grown too attached to their pets that the thought of them become just landfill is not comforting.

if you believe in religion, then explain me this. How come every culture (that hasn't been influenced by Jewish traditions) still believes in the afterlife? It's a natural thing. People don't know if there is life after death, but they want it so much they make themselves believe it.

That's a fallacious argument. The fact that it can't be disproven doesn't lend a shred of credence to the belief. Rather, it demonstrates that the question is not rational.

Um, I wasn't arguing anything. My statement wasn't in support of either one. Only pointing out that neither side can prove anything. Annoying when I read someone who insults either side as if they are idiots for believing what they do, when there is still no proof to definitively support either one.
