  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

is this comment racist or unkind?

South Asian Indian is what you call people from the country of India
Thanks for that bit. It seems when I'm talking about indian cuisine, most of my redneck confreres hear the land of lakes butter commercial - "we call it maize..."

I'm Asian and I live in one of those "Orient" countries and this is honestly my first time encountering the concept of racism through the word "oriental".

I guess "oriental" reeks of European imperialism, just like the word "Negro". It seems that both words were formed to describe the worlds that had existed outside of the "European universe". When you call us Asians orientals, we get that you relying on an outdated, ignorant view of Asian people and their culture. It's not racist, just ignorant.

Secondly, the word tends to "over-exoticize", "over-sensualize", "over-sexualize" and "over-pomp" their race, local traditions and practices. It adds an Old World feel to it. I suppose this is why you see a lot of restaurants and Asian knick knacks with the word "Oriental" in their branding.

Some people cannot avoid parading their moral superiority. If it's not one thing it will be some other silly pretext to voice their indignation. Just laugh at them.

Moral superiority? The morally superior ones are the ones who reject anything that isn't common to them. If they haven't heard it, it must not be true/relevant/etc...

What about "Latin" and "Hispanic" Latin used to refer to people from Portugal, Spain and Italy, as well as those from Latin America (non-US, non-Canada). But nobody seems to use it for Portugal, Spain, and Italy, any more. Hispanic is often used to refer to South and Central Americans, some Caribbean Islands, and pre-Euro-settlement Southwest US (who have some Spanish heritage). But that includes Brazil. Brazil's Native-Portu-Afro-Italo-heritage is not hispanic. How do we refer these days to these groupings (and let's not forget those in these regions who do not have any non-aboriginal, i.e.: post-1492, heritage)?

Since when are Portugal and Italy hispanic?

It's old fashioned at best and I see why some might be offended by it. I avoid using term for reasons of cultural sensitivity.

Don't care if you are offended by this, but it just goes to show you how terms change and really how ridiculous it all is.

bleh every fucking word is going to be a racist slur soon enough. Racism is in the eye of the beholder i guess

On the other hand, I know a guy who self-identifies as mulatto. He's an intelligent individual, so I imagine he knows the origin of the word, but it doesn't bother him.

And that's what it really comes down to: respect for other people's right to self-identify. If an Asian wants to be referred to as Oriental, it's his or her right. On the other hand, except in the case of words that are widely agreed to be offensive, people should be slow to anger if someone uses a term other than their own preferred term.

(I, BTW, am a cocksucking Spic Kike shitmonkey. Just for future refernce.)

Yeah, so? Are those words suppose to be offensive? ;) I understand cocksucking, I understand spic and kike, but what does shitmonkey make you? It better not mean gay because you covered that with cocksucking and I hate redundancy.
Dammit, why do you have to trample on my right to self-identify? :grrr: If I want to use redundant language to describe my sexual identity, then I have the right to do so!

The alternate answer would be that cocksucking refers to oral sex, whereas shitmonkey refers to anal, so they're not truly redundant. I could also add "salami-slapping" and "nipple-biting" if I really wanted to be thorough.

So, a cocksucking, salami slapping, nipple biting, shit monkey? I've just become so offended that I've reverted back to my default state; a 40 year old born again soccer mom. See you all in hell queers!
Can I bite your nipples?

I'm part greasy Wop, too.

The Dude: Walter, the Chinaman who peed on my rug, I can't go give him a bill, so what the fuck are you talking about?

Walter: What the fuck are you talking about? The Chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.

If you're going to refuse me an orgy, the last thing you should be doing is spanking me........no, don't stop!

damn, i thought occidental was an insurance company?in keeping with this new pc stuff,

i would prefer for you to use the term western hemispherian and my sub genre is to be northern. any questions, any confusion...er um...is that perfectly clear? #-o

As I posted in another thread on this general subject. These terms only offend us if we allow ourselves to be offended.

That's subjective, I'm sure that there are things someone could say that would offend you, outside of calling you a particular name. Usually the ones with the lax attitude are the ones the word doesn't apply to.

Whatever faggot, get over it.

After all there are people dying in the world, don't you have something better to do than get your nuts in a bunch over having manners and sounding educated. Go feed a starving person or something.

I'm sure many said the same types of things to Rosa Parks.

That's the crux of it. Its all about manners and civility. I don't call all persons of middleastern heritage "Arabians," as was once the custom, because times have changed and the etiquette is different. By the same token, I don't think an occasional, innocent slip of the tongue should get someone condemned. We live and we learn. We like and we learn. I've recently stopped using the term "twink," because some young men don't want to be stereotyped.
