Is this manipulative?

It really depends on the motive for sending the email. If the sole reason for sending the email is to get a sympathetic reaction, then it may be manipulative. Don't forget, they could just be sending you the email to inform you what is going on, such as a death in the family that means they will be out of town.

That would really depend on the relationship between the two people. For example, if my best friends sent an email saying he and his wife just split up, I wouldn't call that manipulative even though he is need of some support.

If someone sends a message complaining about all the minor problems in their life, that would be far more questionable.

"Manipulative"? Not sure if that's the right term or not. If I say "Wow, you look really good in that outfit", in the hopes it'll make you feel better, is that manipulative?

Yeah, "manipulative" seems to carry a negative connotation. Maybe "to control in a skillful manner" :?
 
That's far from the most skilful way to get what you want. People have very limited sympathy in general. it dries up quick - see the boy who cried wolf.
 
If you're going through a rough time and you want the support of a friend, then letting others know what's bothering you isn't manipulative. However, if you have an ulterior motive of using people's sympathy to get their attention for other reasons, then yes, it's wrong and deceitful.

All that said, the fact that you feel the need to ask seems to suggest that your situation is more like the latter.
 
Totally depends on context. All communications serve to elicit a response of some kind be it emotional or a physical reply. That doesn't mean all communications are manipulative though.
 
I can't stand people fishing for sympathy. It usually means they don't deserve it. Nothing makes me less sympathetic to someone than if they're just feeling sorry for themselves and want attention.

To me it is clearly manipulative. The question should be is it ok to be manipulative in this way?
