Is your nan still alive?

I currently live with my paternal Grandmother; she's ninety and in surprisingly good health considering her weight. She makes me a little nuts, but she was my favorite person in childhood and that covers a lot of aggravation now.

My maternal grandmother died a couple of years ago, well into her nineties; I didn't really know her that well, she was kind of a bitch. But she taught me all I know about etiquette and the more baroque social graces, so she had some good in her.

I spent a lot of time with my grandparents when I was a child, and it was always somehow more special than time with my parents... they were simply more interesting. It's a shame that we often don't have many old people in our lives when we're young, they give us better perspective and a sense of history.

Actually, by "nan" I thought you meant [STRIKE]something about your Indian pita bread getting stale[/STRIKE] your NANNY.

The last time I had a nanny, and the last time I had a living grandmother, were both in the same year, I think...1957. I don't remember all that much about either, as I was never "left at my granny's place to hang around" for an afternoon or a day, and I only saw her when we went there. In retrospect, something tells me that she didn't drive.

My sister (who was 13 or 14 at the time) told me that the nanny was fired by my parents after she once went upstairs with a knife at 3 or 4 in the morning because she heard some noises.

She used to cook some great stuff, though - I especially looked forward to her southern fried chicken...
