Isn't it ironic?

That men aren't showing as much skin in the media despite the fact that homosexuality has become so much more accepted in today's American society?

After watching the trailer for the new Hercules movie featuring The Rock (I wouldn't mind giving him one where the sun never shines ;) ) I was really shocked to see that unlike most of the other Hercules movies of the 1950s and 1960s, Hercules is shirtless but he's also wearing pants. Way back in the day with the old Steve Reeves Hercules movies, he wore nothing but a loincloth! And not only Hercules, I've noticed that a lot of modern-day superheroes no longer wear their underwear outside their tights like they used to. (and were made famous for) Some don't even wear tights anymore and they go out fighting crime in their street clothes. Not to mention, the whole deal with why men don't wear speedos nowadays. Now, you might be thinking "Oh, not another fucking topic about how America is prudish when it comes to sex, WE GET IT." But haven't you noticed how ironic this whole prudishness thing is? Men were showing a lot more skin way back in a time where homosexuality was deemed an abomination and a mental illness and now that people are becoming more informed of the truth of homosexuality and so many people now accept us for who we are, men have been showing less and less skin.

You see where I'm getting at?

I think with superheroes and the undies on the outside thing, they're just trying to modernise the look. I suspect superhero films through the 80s and 90s were few and far between because the modern day audiences don't really identify with them as much as they might have previously. So the reboot trend just modernised the general look of the superhero.

It's very ironic. It's like rain on your wedding day, a free ride when you already paid, and so on. :p

Lol, glad I'm not the only one who first thought of the 90s.

But really, who would have guessed back then that in 2014 a couple of gay guys would be chatting on the Internet about the time period's postmodernist feminist poetry? Isn't it ironic? Don't ya think?

If that song gets in my head, I will come to Canada (heading there anyway) to harm you. :jab:

There were speedo and skimpy shorts a generation ago but now young American are pussies in knee-length board shorts.

This is true. Kids wore cutoffs so short it wasn't a terrible surprise when "stuff" sort of dangled out and had to be put back.

Yes, and (here in Holland at least) PDA has also become much more rare.

Not sure that's true here. OTOH, the States are hardly monolithic; PDA could be rising some places and decreasing in others.

I wonder if everyone is more aware of the attention and publicity that skimpy clothing gets and are trying to avoid that.

But when there was lots of skimpy clothing no one cared.

Once again, you're talking out your ass. Short shorts have been back in style for young American guys for at least two years.

Wish they'd do it around here! At the beach two days ago I heard a guy saying how stupid shorts were if they showed knees.... Of course he had his shorts half off his butt with some skin showing above the undies, but knees? no, never!

Most of those don't count as short shorts -- medium, mostly. It doesn't count as short-shorts until the inseam is less than four inches.

Our gym shorts in high school had a 3" inseam, and the official shorts for both cross-country and track were less than that (besides being flimsy pseudo-silk nylon that in light colors was practically see-through).

BTW, I remember one summer with some guys and we came to this awesome lake; no one had shorts along, so they started making cutoffs -- and competed making the inseam really short -- guys and gals both often wore cutoffs with an inseam close to zero.

BTW2, I liked the video about making cutoffs. It brought to mind one incredibly hot day between summer terms at college, when I came across a great swimming hole on a back road in farm country. I had no shorts along, so I took off my jeans, lay them carefully across a stump, and using my machete chopped once and got perfectly matching cuts on both legs. :D

I don't know...I believe these are tout la rage across the US this summer.

Open carry.

What do they even call a thing like that? First time I recall seeing one.

O really!. Those are woman twittering away in the twittersphere.

This thread is talking about real men in real streets and about young guys on the beach who are scared of speedoes and who don't shower at the gym because they're scared of encountering a naked man, viz

Yeah. FWIW, the ads in Sunday's paper for summer clothing showed guys' shorts just above the knee, which is hardly short, and gals' with an inseam of maybe two inches.

What, everyone would rather ruin their jeans because they're too shy to swim in their underwear?

Yes it is ironic. For it is BECAUSE gays are so much out there that brahs feel like they need to dress more no 'mo.

The comments here are really surprising as here in France, during the summer, I cannot walk down the street or drive into town without being distracted by young bare-chested men. Plus shorts of all sizes are worn by nearly every one.

So I certainly see no evidence of the male species covering up their beautifully sculpted torsos.

This is how I remember shorts in the (early?) 80's.

I could do without those striped knee socks. Was that the same era of leg warmers? :)

And that 'belly button' shirt with the cuffed Daisy Dukes . . . ? That kid behind him is probably thinking, 'What a fag.'

Sadly the knee high stripped "athletic" socks were part of the package. Even worse when worn in 80's porn.
