I'm not a lawyer, so take this with a grain of salt. I do believer, however, that what you were told about needing US citizenship correct. It is illegal to work in this country as a foreign citizen without a green card. Certainly no adult company is going to spend the time and money to get you a temporary work permit. (Or whatever the official paperwork is called.)

All US adult producers need to keep documentation to prove the age of performers. Generally, this is a driver's license. It's doubtful any company would accept a foreign passport, as it would be a permanent legal document that shows they broke the law by employing a non-citizen.
