  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

It shouldn't be called Gay Pride

The raids at the Black Cat here in Los Angeles were three years before that.

Just no national press.

It did not start with Stonewall but Stonewall Riots was the pivotal moment that had the greatest impact on LGBT rights campaign at that time. That's why it gained more attention in the media than other similar happenings around the country.

Even if Stonewall was first/wasn't first, homosexuals in other parts of the world don't care about it and celebrate their "Pride" because of their own local reason.

My theory is . . .

The majority (or the most socially-accepted demographic) already has pride. It's a given.

But minorities, especially those discriminated against and marginalized, must take steps to valid themselves.

So, therefore, as long as gays are discriminated against, Gay Pride is totally appropriate.

When the day comes that very few hate gays, and we still celebrate Gay Pride, then you'll have a point.

Until then, White Pride is offensive, and Gay Pride is not. (Religions excluded. Beliefs are different.)

I think if the people who organized white pride parades just wanted to celebrate their lack of melanin, no one would care. And if gay pride organizers made a point of terrorizing heterosexuals as part of their parade, then it would be gay pride that's offensive instead of the other way around.

It has not much to do with the words; more to do with the differences between attitudes and values of the people who organize white pride parades vs. gay pride parades.

An interesting point, but like others have said, Gay Pride encompasses a long, drawn-out fight for civil rights and social tolerance/acceptance over the course of decades. In recognition of Stonewall, it's a fitting tribute to have Gay Pride on that date. ;)

Wasn't there a Confederate general named Stonewall Jackson?

^That's a rather bold coincidence.

^It just means that "Stonewall Day" can have more than one meaning...

No... I think the confederate racists will know to steer clear from a day belonging to the homosexuals.

St. Patrick wasn't the only important symbol of Ireland. Yet his day is de facto an Irish pride day.

Columbus wasn't the only (or first) important Italian. Yet his day is de facto Italian pride day.

The taking of the Bastille wasn't the first or only important day in the French revolution.

If we look only for the "first" event, we go back in time forever, because events are always dependent on previous events.

The important point is that we have to pick one thing--a symbol--that represents us.

Since modern pride events are often on or near the anniversary of Stonewall (excepting those areas with particularly cold or hot weather), why not give the day a symbol we can rally around?

The same it doesn't matter what you call it argument applies to calling it Pride.

So we already have a name to rally around.

Are you suggesting we must change it for some other reason?

Yeah, it's so generic sounding.

Isn't Martin Luther King Day a lot more energizing than a generic Black Pride Day?

Not really. It is celebrating a person and his accomplishments.

Black History Month celebrates an entire people.

Maybe we should lobby to have Gay History Month. Lincoln, J Edgar Hoover.. we have got quite a few historical superstars...

I think the thing that makes it less about gay pride and more about party party party is the fact that it ALWAYS happens on a weekend. it is not associated with a specific date. Cities across the nation hold it at different times. It is always associated with the weekend and a block party of some scale.

Where is the Martin Luther King block party?

Is it a time to remember the actions of one changing so much for so many.

Why does Independence day not always occur on the closest weekend?

Because it celebrates the date of a specific action versus the party.

Since the name will get the most publicity it should contain the most important message. I suggest "Gay Equality Day".

It's called "pop" music even when the particular song isn't popular. Both "jazz" and "rock" music no longer have the sexual connotations they once were supposed to. They're just descriptors. Words. Noises to indicate that particular thing we're talking about. "Pride" may not be a perfect word for the entire gestalt of activities and feelings the festival is supposed to encompass, but it seems most people know what a "pride fest" is. So I don't see the need to try to get everyone on board with changing the name, even assuming you could get people to agree on what "better" name to call it.
