For over a week my the left side of my penis has been itching furiously. At first I thought it was dry skin (have had issues with it in the past and it was a little dry and scaly in one spot) and just tried lotion. Now it has been progressively spreading through my scrotum, and is becoming very irritating.

I am barely sexually active. Haven't had sex in over a year and have only had sex with 2 people (one oral only and she was a virgin, and the other I wore condoms and know well, she is clean), so I don't think anything sexually transmitted would be the cause.

I do shave my penis (hair grows all the way up to the head of my penis, which is very irritating) and scrotum and some surrounding area. I have been avoiding shaving it right now since I figure it would only make it worse.

Any advice would be great. Doctor's are too expensive and I have had too many "undiagnosable visits" in the past to put my faith in them.

I think I'd try a cortisone cream to start with. If that doesn't help an anti-fungal for jock itch would be my next step.

i actually did try cortaid a couple of times. It was temporary relief of the the itchy, but very temporary. Lamasil seemed to just be drying it out more and didn't relieve itching at all.

it sounds like jock itch .. but without knowing for sure i wouldn't just apply any cream. a doc will be able to help you quickly.

CRABS my boy, spray with a fly spray with pyrethrins in it. hook ouy your magnifying glass and give yourself a little lesson in wild life.
PS if it stings you are on the right track.

LOL at your description but I agree that it does have the hallmarks of a seafood infestation...and yes you can catch them even if you have not had sex with someone ... they are crafty buggers.

Sounds like it may be eczema (sp) to me. I've battled this on and off for years. The more air it gets, the better. Sleep nude if you can and wear loose underwear (like boxers) and shorts if possible. Dry the area thoroughly after showering and don't over wash the area. Cortizone creams help but you often need a perscription to get one with a high enough concentration. Elocon works for me. I would see a dermatologist if it doesn't improve with my suggestions.

Best of luck.

If the itchiness is on one side and it seems to be limited to a somewhat circular area is accompanied by an area of redness, it is very likely tinea cruris- aka jock itch.

If the usual treatment- over the counter anti-fungals and washing with an anti-dandruff shampoo don't resolve it, then make an appointment with your family doctor.

its probably from shaving

I remember i had a bad ass itch a few years ago and the doctor gave me some nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream and it knocked it out in days. Maybe you might have male yeast infection.

If it were crabs, wouldn't my entire bush be itchy, not just the area at the bottom of my penis and my scrotum witch are relatively smooth.

There is no noticeable rash or markings, so I still don't think it is jock itch.

I thought eczema too because I have dealt with dry skin down there in the past, but it was nothing like this. That was more skin actually flaking off and being sensitive, not just itching like crazy.

It's Sunday, so no chance of seeing a doctor today, and it is very unlikely I would be able to get in to see him this week (I work 40 hours a week and am in college).

I'd listen to KaraBulut. Scan all the other threads and see who gives the most sage advice;)

just got back from the doctor. She was unsure of the cause, but didn't think it was anything serious. She thought it was probably irritation from a soap or detergent and possibly increased sweating (recently started going to the gym). She prescribed a mild steroid cream for the itching and told me to get back with her if it doesn't go away or a rash forms.

sounds to me like you have a fungal infection caused by sweat and heat. I would recommend pevisone. One dose maybe 2.

Why would you go to a female doctor with a male problem. Of course she is unsure of the cause.

Geez, some of the idiotic things said on this forum! Some people need to get a clue!

Like I said in an earlier post, it would be at least a week before I could get in to see my doctor. I had to settle for one of his colleagues.
