The other day, I got a single honey crisp apple at the grocery store. Price per pound was such that getting a big bag of them would require one to cash in one's life's savings. LOL Despite cost, it was pretty lackluster. A red delicious is comparatively packed with flavor.

Awww, thanks anyway. I just think the fruit is so beautiful.
I don't know if I'm getting pickier in my old age, or if this is a bad apple year... But every apple I've had (including varieties I liked in the past) has been dismal. I've been able to choke them down, but that's the best I can say. I've only been buying single apples--and I'm glad after every disappointment that I don't have a big bag full of the most recent apple failure to empty.
The best apple experience I've had so far was a mini pie (pie for one) that turned up on bakery clearance. I didn't need it--but got it, anyway. I don't think the apples were necessarly anything special, but the spicing was OK.
One store might have better apples. I keep thinking I'll have to try and get there--but it doesn't happen, since they are a bit out of my way. Or maybe even a different major grocery store would help--although I'm not terribly optimistic about that.
