Hello everyone!

I hope everyone had a great holiday. Mine wasn't really what I expected.
Without boring you with too many details, I've been fighting Stage 4 Colon Cancer for a little over 6 years now.

Well, during the holiday break, I finally went and had an APR (Abdominoperineal Resection). In short, the surgeons removed my ENTIRE large colon (ascending, transcending, descending, sigmoid).

They also removed my rectum, and sewed up my anus.

I just wanted to share that with everyone in case someone is going through something similar and needs a buddy to talk to.

Sadly, I'll be out of work for quite awhile, and I'll miss my inmates! LOL.

The surgery went well, but as you can imagine, things seem MUCH different!

If anyone has any questions (sexually based or not! LOL), please feel free to ask,
I'm more than happy to help!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years Season.

Always,
-Jay

first and foremost - love to you and prayers --

stage 4 for over 6 years - you are one hell of a fighter, I salute you!

so I take it colostomy -

but what is the prognosis now - has it all been removed? chemo or radiation up ahead?

usually I ask questions one at a time -

sorry

omg, that sux, :(. I'm glad the surgery went well, hope you the best ..|

I have a LOT of questions...

AND -- I don't want to sound TOO naive or anything -- BUT...

Is stage 4 WORSE than stage 1 -- or vice versa???

How do you digest FOOD (and power your body) without any of what they removed???

I always thought that your "guts" were IMPORTANT...

Just curious (I have a LOT more questions -- but thought I'd start with the seemingly simpler ones)...

I feel ABSOLUTELY AWFUL that you're having to endure this at the young age of ONLY 33...

AND...

I ONLY WISH the BEST for you...

:confused::confused::confused:

my friend marlo named her bag "orville," it always lightened the atmosphere when she would manually fart and say, "Orville is being fussy today; he and I are not getting along...."

She had Spina Boefida, and a colostomy when she was 9...

I am sorry you went through it. Do you know what caused/contributed to you getting colon cancer at such a young age and what the rest of us can do to prevent this challenging ordeal?

Thank you for being candid and sharing your personal story with us - I wish you all the best and hope that your life will be better than most!

I'm with Gentry. I have many questions. You chose to discuss this, so I am just going to ask.

My great Aunt had to have virtually all of her small intestine removed 2 years ago due to an abdominal obstruction that pretty much killed the living cells there. From what I learned, most of the nutrients of what you eat is absorbed there. She has many supplements she has to add intravenously now.

I won't ask about the sex, since that's none of my business, but how do you function now? And are you cancer free?

Holy Cats! I can't imagine what you've gone through. You've got to be the poster boy for human strength and perseverence. I'll leave the questions to others and give you a whole lot of this :=D:

i worked for about 12 years with a group of surgeons who performed similar procedures to what you describe....and worse!

i can see in my memory what you may be experiencing, but i have no idea, truly....

but i offer you my prayers, now that you have shared your circumstance with us.....and my wishes for a strong recovery and a good life...

Looking for a silver lining here...ooh, here's one. You can boost any guy's self-esteem by looking at his dick and saying "There's no WAY that'll ever fit up my ass!"

Here's to a healthier 2008! (*8*)

lol! ^

I wonder if the stoma works as a sexual receptacle...

To answer one of the questions...

Stage 1 is the first stage, Stage 4 is the last and most advanced stage. It means the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and has gotten to other parts of the body. So it's pretty damn hard to remove it all at that point. You can snip out the most problemed areas sometimes though, and that helps out with some problems.

Oh, and if I understand correctly, the large intestine doesnt' have much "food" in it; it has been mostly digested by that time, but it's not formed into solid poops. I think the water comes out of it in the large intestine and when it's ready to go, it drops down into the rectum.

So when you get rid of your bumhole, they redirect your large intestine to a port on the outside of your body (called a Stoma) and it comes out into handy poobags!

My question is... Are the poobags transparent?

Paathogen is teh best! He's like the Rocky of Cancer.

No more buttsex :bartshock

Can I join the (group)?

Wow, thank you for sharing that. It takes a lot to open up and share, especially with a group of people you don't even know for the most part. I wish you all the best, and I'm truly sorry this happened to you. And you've had Stage 4 cancer for six years??!!
And you're only a little older than I am. Your post really made me think, and I almost started to cry. It's just not fair. Sorry if I'm rambling, but wow, just wow.
Have a lot of hugs, and take care of you.

Jay, as one who conquered Prostate cancer 12 years ago, I send you my hugs and prayers.

The phases you went through, are not alien to me.

I do have a question:

Did you submit to colonoscopys before, from what age, and how often?

I go through colonoscopy and signoscopy every tenth month. Have done so for 3 years now.

Just wondered if you were going through that as well.

Do you have to take vitamin supplements to make up for those that are made by the large intestine?

Jack, this is the best posting I could imagine. It speaks so clearly to what I would say, so I am quoting it. Shep+

Paathogen,
This is a great thread, and we have not had very many of those
lately. I salute you. There is never anything to be gained in being
self pitying, and thanks for reminding everyone who reads this thread that is not what life is about.
You have already helped more people here than you could possibly know. Some lessons are in how to live, others are in how to have lived and now face death. You are doing all of that and much more.
Thanks, and keep on keeping on, and I hope this thread goes on and on and on.
