On that note, below is a Los Angeles Times article on McCain's 2d marriage (he cheated on his 1st wife as well, resulting in their 1964 divorce). I guess he's morally acceptable, since his 2d wife didn't have cancer, she was only recovering from a catastrophic automobile accident; of course, she had waited for him during his five years of captivity...and it was his second divorce, and both divorces resulted from infidelity...hm, how to weigh the levels of our outrage...?

I can see how his wife may have been, and probably WAS a victim, but I fail to see how the party or the country were in any way affected. Was he tapping his foot in a public restroom? Was he cruising a public park looking for sex? Was he exploiting anyone who was not a consenting adult? No. It was a private thing between two consenting adults. Nobody else's business, except his wife, of course. . . but even THAT'S not for me to say. Even THAT is between him, his wife, and whatever higher power they may recognise.
Why can't Americans just "move-on?" I bet a lot of the folks crying foul here are the same ones who slam on the brakes and whip their heads around at the hint of a tragic traffic accident.

As much as a feel very sorry for Edwards' wife, I am even more shocked that Edwards could have thought that he would have been able to keep fucking around under wraps. That leads me to believe that my belief that he was a good candidate for president was in error. The man has very poor judgment.

Edwards was out of the race by January 30th. He had been in three contests and won 26 delegates. If anything his presence hurt Obama because it split the anti-Hillary vote.

Sbaralgia, I don't get your logic. "Well McCain DID IT, these guys did it, everyone did it! So its not a big deal." The American public has been very sympathetic towards Edward's wife. If he was the Democratic presidential nominee, this would have destroyed his campaign instantly. The betrayal and paternity question of this affair would overshadow anything McCain did back in the '60s (even if it was the same thing).
And RandomAccess, this would hurt you in a way. It would guarantee another 4 years of a Republican president with the same policies of George W. Bush. This is the type of scandal that kills party chances of getting into office.
