I spent about $400 on a pair of Armani sunglasses 10 years ago. I bought them while on vacation in Miami for about $200 but when I got home it turned out I had lost them... so I bought them again, hence the $400. Stoopid.

I find it soooooo disgusting how the US and South Africa can get good sunnies for dirt cheap prices. You got Ray-Ban for $60 and Oakleys for $40? Damn you, ya lucky man. I got Ray-Ban through the black market, and it still cost moi $140, as the full price was $330. I'm desperate for an in season Morrisey, but, but, it's $600. hmmm, I think I need a night job for cash. Anyone here loaded and want some man to man action? My doctor told me I needed the Morrisey immediately or else my eyes will be irreverisibly damaged.

Make no mistake - we get fleeced for everything down here. The Oakleys were ZAR870 and about R1100 in 2000 and 2004 when I bought the two pairs; at that stage we're looking at about a Rand of 6:1 and 8:1 to the US$, so I'd have paid about $130 for them had I bought them from a store, but they were retailing for about $90 from Oakley.com who won't ship to South Africa because they have an agency here charging the above prices.

The Ray-bans were bought in duty-free at international departures at FLL outside Miami, which is why they were cheaper than normal retail.

You don't even want to know what we pay for things like CDs, DVDs and electronics here in .za, let alone any branded clothing... a good pair of Levi 501s, made locally under licence, is just under 500 bucks, which at today's rate is about US$70.

Over here for a decent pair of Levis, we'd probably pay £75, which is around US$140. Luckily, I rarely buy branded clothing, and can thus get a decent pair of jeans for around £20-£25. I don't need to buy them often, either way. They last a while, and every now and again my eldest brother buys some new jeans and gives me his old expensive branded jeans. One of the pairs cost him £130, and they're now mine

My most expensive sunglasses were £20. I have two pairs, one which cost £20 and one which cost £10, and yet I can never remember which is which.

Im sorry, but there are so many more things that cost 200.00 that I would drop my money on, definately not a pair of sunglasses....

it's amazing how many people are willing to drop so much money on sunglasses, Jeans, shirts, when ALL you are paying for is a name on the product! nope sorry-- I have had my 12 dollar pair of sunglasses for over 10 years now, and my eyesight hasn't gotten any worse.

The most I've spent is $40 each on a two pair of Kenneth Cole (at Macy's) - one charcoal gray, the other deep bronze. I've had a number of people ask me what brand they are because I guess they just 'look' more expensive. I bought two pair because they were the most comfortable sunglasses I'd ever had - and they looked pretty cool, too.

As far as UV protection I also wondered if I was getting the same 'full' protection with these as people get with the uber-expensive ones. So, I took them into my optometrist who has a machine to measure UV penetration and he said I was getting 99.99% protection - which is "as good as it gets."

Now I just have to concentrate on not losing them or sitting on them, which has been the cause of death for too many in the past.

I must have them.

They are just SO perfect, gold rims, gold stems, just the right amount of reflective gold in the lenses...just subtle enough to say, "Oh, that's right, Sweetness, these rock" ...without looking like Helen Keller lost in a bag of glitter....

But.

They are $250 at 'The Sunglass Hut'.

Have I lost what precious bit is left of my mind ?

We're talking full UBa/ and um, UB 'trippin' protection.

Are they 'too pimp' ? Yeah, maybe...But, I don't care....they are SO comfortable, and damn, frankly I look kinda 'mmm hmm' in them...

But, $250.00 ?? Have I gone daft ?

Sorry, I am not a slave to fashion, especially overpriced designer wire sunglasses that you bend the hell out of when you sit your well-toned butt on them by accident.

Go walk in the mall, can you REALLY tell the difference in price of sunglasses that people have around their neck or on their heads ? IT DOES NOT MATTER. Go put $225 in your IRA and use the balance to buy knockoffs, with UV protection, at Target, Kohl's or the 7-11. People do not care.

Sorry, I am a little bitchy today , it must be spring.

170 on some ray ban aviators i wear them all the time though so feel it has been a good investment for me and they look great
