I've kicked off Twitter. BOO HOO

I ran into a Twitter account recently. It was run by a 50-something guy who apparently was a tax consultant or accountant or some such. His tweets were all one of three types.

1. Basic solicitations for more business. "If your small business needs a tax consultant, contact my firm at..."

2. Simple and somewhat generic tax or accounting tips. "Keep your receipts in a secure location."

3. Messages to porn stars and online sex performers, with solicitations. "Really hot ass. Made me cum. You available for private show Thurs? $$$"

Part of me wants to think we're to the point where porn and sex is so accepted that you can simply do this. To wit, use the same public messaging system to solicit sex as you do business clients, and no one will care. But I'm thinking it's far more likely that nobody told him that everybody could see all these messages...and he was blissfully unaware that his would-be clients could see him waving his dollars at these guys.

I have a twatter, but I don't really get it. It also annoys me when one of the entities I do follow bombards out 30+ of the sodding things every day.

So I don't really see the point. I either don't know enough interesting people to make it worthwhile, or perhaps most people broadcasting are not nearly as interesting as they would have us all believe.

Years ago, they used to give athletes and actors and other celebrities semi-regular columns in newspapers and magazines. And you'd learn that just because you like them in one field didn't mean you'd like them in another. Sometimes they'd be terrible at it, and other times they just wouldn't talk about stuff you were interested in.

Same thing with Twitter. Some people are good with it. Some are terrible with it. So I don't follow people unless they ARE good. I don't follow mot of my favorite musicians on Twitter because their twitter feeds aren't very interesting. I dropped one because he retweeted anybody who mentioned him anywhere, and it got more than a little annoying. But I follow other musicians I'm not huge fans of, because their tweets ARE interesting. Similarly, I follow two Colorado Mammoth players on twitter, but not the others. Just a matter of finding the interesting ones.

Once when I was in Vegas, a bunch of my friends desperately wanted to get into the Playboy Club. (Not surprisingly, I didn't, so I didn't go with them.) They went through a bunch of hoops to get in, but were finally granted admittance. And after about five minutes, they looked at each other and said "Wait, why did we want to get in here again?"

So now you won't be following me anymore? Boo hoo, indeed.

Therein lying the key. I'm not sure I have the patience for sifting through that much chaff. And, if I could paraphrase Ebert, I'm still not sure the pay-off is worth the set-up.

The more I think about it, the more I realise that I don't like the unfettered internet 2.0 (or whichever version we're in currently). It's a bit like the current glut of porn out there - having a camera and knowing some people willing to shuck their kit for money doesn't make you a Cadinot or a Larry Flynt, and Twitter is no different. I kinda wish more people* realised that.

I never had interest in twitter. I feel like it's useless for my needs. For news, I rely on better sources, for entertainment there is fb and youtube. I notice people develop some sort of insecurities and narcissism with twitter; they'll spend hours brainstorming some shit to say to get attention and million re-tweets otherwise they feel worthless, unpopular etc. . .

That's the internet for you. The blogosphere allowed everybody to be a columnist, and YouTube turned everybody into a director. And the main thing we found was that most people aren't very good at being a columnist or director. For every good piece of writing or video I've seen, I've seen twenty that were at best forgettable. Nature of the beast, I guess. If you give everyone the opportunity, most of those who take advantage probably won't be worth sitting through.

Well, that could be the case anywhere else, right? I'm told to "like my new business/improv group/band" on Facebook on a daily basis, or told to subscribe to a youtube channel. Most of what I post on twitter passes without comment. Two "favorites" or one retweet means I hit the jackpot, really. But I enjoy doing it, and I'm still gaining followers, so I guess others are enjoying it, too.
