First there was Whitney Houston. Now here comes Janet Jackson.
The top-selling pop music divas are coming to the small screen one by one – seemingly via the reality TV craze.
Jackson, however, wont be running around with a potbelly, cussing out her fans for asking for autographs nor talking openly about bowel movements.
At least we can hope.
A spokesperson for the superstar confirmed to Blackvoices.com that she will indeed step into the world of reality television via an as-yet-untitled music competition series for MTV.
So think 'American Idol,' not 'Being Bobby Brown.'
The show, which has already begun casting, will feature Jackson mentoring a group of aspiring singers and dancers in the months leading up to her world tour, which launches on Sept. 10.
"It's really about finding who's the next Janet Jackson or Justin Timberlake or Usher," executive producer Dave Broome told 'Variety' magazine. "And we'll find it from a pool of people who you wouldn't typically find it from. We'll go to YMCAs, church groups, local community centers and try to cast the show."
Sounds like fun.
The program will be shot in various street locales, rather than on a studio soundstage.
Producers are reportedly still ironing out the prize - but it could potentially relate to Jackson's tour, reports say.
Jackson is no stranger to the boob tube. Way before she became an internationally renowned music icon, TV audiences fell in love with her on series such as 'Good Times,' 'Diff'rent Strokes' and 'Fame.'
Some people feel like this is a move unworthy for Janet. But I think its smart for to cash in on the reality show craze and re-establish herself in pop culture. Any thoughts?
this is a good idea. it will help promote her tour. Discipline is a good album and worthy of a listen. I hope her personality shows through on this show. Also, she should show off some of those dancing skills!

I don't like Reality shows much, but it would be cool to see her on one. And hopefully it will give her career the push it needs (combined with her tour).
I love the album and I wish it wasn't a flop I think it's a very good effort. I didn't like a lot of the songs at first, but it most definitely grew on me. I wish her record company would've pushed it more as well, and I'm actually surprised that they didn't b/c they would when she first got signed.
It's a shame, but there's nothing that can really be done now to save the album. I mean the tour may help, but it's not really gonna make the album do THAT much better. I"m just glad that she's not letting the flop get in the way for touring.
I guess IDJ were too busy planning Mariah's 18th #1 hit, that Janet got put on a back-burner, lol.
That's the truth! I like Mariah, but it's obvious her team is focused on #1s, record sales, and money. This with having less quality in her music. Mariah isn't the same as she used to be.
With Janet, I've always loved her. She called into KIIS-FM and said she'll be performing 40 songs in her setlist for the Rock Witchu Tour. Can't wait to see her live, I'm SPAZZING!!!
The scariest thing is you can't get Velvet Rope anymore (arguably her best) outside of America. I have All For You and Damita Jo, but they were 21/22 track albums that were half filler. I appreciate the amount she's putting out, but I'd much rather a 12 track album which has been really worked on.

WHAT?! That's horrible. Because it's 2008, I doubt you'll be able to find CDs before 2004 in most record stores. I only see 20 Y.O. and Discipline on shelves (Best Buy, FYE, and Virgin Megastores are the few that sell Damita Jo and others). The internet is the largest option.
And the ppl that are saying she wont sell cause her past albums havent sold well, look at Madonna, her last album in the states have been duds, and she still sells. People go to tour to see your career, not just your last album.
Opening act is LL Cool J in North America and Donnie Klang overseas. So far...eavesdroppers in Vancouver confirmed 24 songs...she's performing hits from all 11 albums! I'm getting my tickets this Friday to see her on October 7th!
Aww, thats horrible. I can understand, because I went through depression and anxiety, still battling many demons...but Janet is one of the reasons I'm better today!

I just got a job at the staple center...and we went backstage where they store all the incoming merchandise....and thier were two rows of boxes; one gigantic row with the name "Miley Cyrus" and five or six rows with the name "Janet Jackson" on it...
If i work her concert I'll tell you how it is in her LA trip!!!

Good work dude. I was considering working for Bank Atlantic Center, but I'm sure I'd get in trouble for dancing and singing to every song instead of working.
I saw Janet twice for the Rhythm Nation Tour in the UK and met her when I was 2 years old...don't remember any of it. I've missed about 10 shows since then, but I'm not missing out anymore. Get my ticket tomorrow! I'll be going with friends, but they can sit wherever they want, I want to be as close as possible.
I'm on the contrary am not excited to see Janet live in concert. I saw her performing the other day for the troops and I was majorly disappointed. Jan's lost her touch, ever since she divorced Rene, she isn't captivating me like she used to in her heyday. But do tell me how the concert went.
You must be crazy! Rene had a lot of creative input, but with or without Rene, Janet is still Janet. She's 42 and has been through a lot, not everyone can maintain or recapture their glory days. Although she's not the reigning diva, she's still relevant and that performance on United America was HOT! She hasn't lost a thing...only thing that has changed is her music and her age.
