Re: Holy crap, Janet kissed him

There has been speculation about the guys in her concerts as to whether they were 'plants in the audience'.

Thats why I started the thread. That and she kisses him . . . and she grabs his crotch
I think they're planted lol I dont think I could just grab just some random guys dick like that

Re: Janet fans!! Rock Witchu Tour...who's going?

Damn, a lot of celebrities showed up at Los Angeles. Apparently even Queen Latifah and Britney Spears showed up!

Discipline re-enters the R&B/Hip-Hop Album Charts @ #85. :D

Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def Jam

After just 14 months on Island Def Jam, Janet Jackson announced today (Sept. 22) her departure from the label. According to Jackson's publicist, the label agreed to dissolve their relationship with the artist at her request.

After a long stint with Virgin, Jackson inked a deal with Island in July 2007 and released her label debut, "Discipline," in February. When album sales failed to meet expectations, the singer expressed dissatisfaction with Island Def Jam, first telling SOHH.com that the label "stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album" after releasing the first single, "Feedback."

Earlier this month, she hinted about potentially severing ties with Island Def Jam to Billboard, stating, "I can't say if we'll be working with them in the future. I don't know what the future holds between the two of us."

Executive produced by Jackson and her boyfriend, Island Urban president Jermaine Dupri, "Discipline" debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 in March with 181,000 copies sold. But it has shifted only 415,000 copies in the United States so far, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and spent just 14 weeks on the chart.

Now, Jackson "will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system," reads a statement from her team. "Always known to break new ground and set trends, Janet's departure from Island makes her one of the first superstar artists to have the individual freedom to promote their work through a variety of avenues such as iTunes, mobile carriers and other diverse and innovative channels."

Jackson is currently on the road with her first tour in seven years, "Rock Witchu," with support form LL Cool J and Donnie Klang. The Live Nation-promoted outing began Sept. 10 in Vancouver and runs through Oct. 22 in Dallas.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

Good for Janet for taking control of her career. IDJ did nothing for her, so perhaps she'll join with LiveNation to promote her album more. It's a great album if it only got some play time on the radio and a push online.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

Enh, I didn't think the album was any good. There's nothing wrong with sticking with a formula (ask AC/DC), but you do need to keep coming up with catchy numbers, whcih I didn't think this CD had.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

Why doesn't she just start her own record label like most big artists? She can call it "Ninja Star Nipple Records".

I actually think Janet had some really good songs from her last album, "So Excited" and "All Night" but they all flopped badly for some reason.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

I didn't know Donnie Klang was on tour with her. Damn he is fine.

Speaking of Donnie, I kinda felt bad for him. His album debuted at 19 and then plummeted to 91!

As for Janet, I don't think the record label had much to do with it. We're living in a different time now. Albums don't sell like they used to.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

>>>My question was why was Janet sticking with a formula which obviously wasn't working?

A few possibilities.

One - she might just really be comfortable in the role. She's been playing the shy-but-you-can-find-the-sexy-person-underneath card for...what? At least a decade or so. She may simply like that groove.

Two - the genre plays to her strengths. Because, let's face it, she does not have a great singing voice. And please note - I'm not dissing her here. She's put out some great songs. "Again" kills me every time. And the reason it kills me is BECAUSE the song plays to her strengths. She sounds like a vulnerable woman who is not-quite-resigned to falling back in love with somebody she thought she was over. She's put out some good uptempo numbers, too, but most of those just display a slightly different version of the same persona. They sound vulnerable but resilient. As if to say, "You think I'm fragile, but I'm tougher than that."

But honestly, her voice isn't suited to much more. Her voice doesn't have much power. She can't belt out a number like most R&B singers. And if she's like most human beings, she's probably started losing the top part of her range, and it'll be hard for her to hit the higher notes. (Not that she exactly hits really high ones anyway.)

If I were in the producer's chair, I'd like to try out something. Get some midtempo numbers, and have her sing them in her lower register. You know - the one she uses on the first verse of "Love Will Never Do Without You". Her voice has some more "oomph" there, and that part of the range tends to stick around. It'd be interesting to see if I could get a good performance out of her sticking solely with that. Who knows - we might even get a good dance track out of it. :)

Exactly...the last few CDs weren't too bad, Discipline was stonger than the last two, but if it ain't broke don't fix it. Expect her to work with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the next album. Plus, she didn't write the last few albums. She needs to put her own feelings into her songs again

Janet can sing when she wants to, but what she's done hasn't been strong. The problem is that JD has put his hand towards the music and he "thinks" he know Janet music but he doesn't. All the stuff he's had a hand in doesn't work

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

When the CDs aren't selling they always blame lack of promotion. Could it be that the CD is not good to begin with?
Or if it's good it's just not flavor of the moment. That's why Madonna keep changing her music all the time. Janet songs' all sound the same to me.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

I still love Janet :)

And she made kick ass videos back in the day

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

Expect her to work with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the next album.

I'm not sure if these three working together again is the wisest choice to make. She really needs to update her music not going back in time. People got tired of the same Janet over and over and now she's paying the price of her lack of reinvention.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

JJ & TL did bring out some great stuff in Janet, and it wasn't really formulaic. There were a lot of different sounds and textures on their albums together - they weren't locked into the same groove over and over. I don't think working with them again would necessarily be a bad move, providing they've got some choice material. If they don't, well...

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

1) Free free free...freedom!!

2) Feedback leaked the second week of December 2007, while Janet was STILL recording her album. It's the biggest leak of all time. The label sent it to ITunes three weeks later, then premiered the video and sent it to radio a month after the leak. Bad timing. It did peak at #19 on the BB Hot 100...her first top 20 single in 7 years.

3) Janet didn't have any live performances of Feedback until the week of her release. IDJ wanted Rock with U as the second single while Janet wanted Luv. This is where the trouble began. So the label sent RWU and Luv to radio at the same time...THREE SINGLES ON RADIO AT ONCE? Bad idea.

4) Once the album released and the Rock With U video premiered, Janet got the flu, canceled SNL and further appearances due to her illness and IDJ stopped all promotion...after a month within it's release! Premature if you ask me!

Discipline COULD HAVE been a bigger success. But...Janet's management and label did nothing for pre-album hype. Luv was doing great on Urban radio, but no video or push from IDJ saw the song tank. Right now, Can't B Good is her current single on Urban radio and has made the top 20, but it has NO VIDEO.

To make success, you need a cooperative team. Janet couldn't possibly get radio to accept her (abandoned her after the Superbowl back in 2004), appear on televsion to promote her product, and go overseas. She needed the label's help!

IDJ sucks...so I'm glad she's gone. She needs to go with Live Nation or independent. She's rich enough to produce her own music (like Prince)...she doesn't need the constraints of a record label, who will force you to make the record THEY want.

Her music needs to appeal to everyone, not just adults and diehard fans. She needs to make more meaningful, dance, positive music.

I think that's something that was expected when Damita Jo came out. We wanted to know what she was thinking at the time and her response to it all b/c Janet has always expressed what she thought and always put a message in her music. She connected personally with the music, but lately it seems she hasn't. Not that I don't love the material, but the "deepness" isn't there. She needs to have music with a message again and not let JD anywhere near the studio.

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

I just want 90s Janet back. And 90s Mariah. And 90s Whitney. I just want them all back.

2000's R&B sucks.....

Re: Janet dissolves relationship with Island Def J

How could you NOT notice Janet is a freak? The "janet." and "Damita Jo" albums....Twenty Foreplay...Rope Burn...Would You Mind.

Someone doesn't just write these songs without a little truth to them hehe.

Re: Janet fans!! Rock Witchu Tour...who's going?
