Jay Leno Apologizes for Gay Jokes

Food for thought:

Would this have happened if the shoe were on the other foot? Ryan Philippe is sexy and attractive. Had Philippe asked Leno (who is "older, paunchy, and not particularly attractive") the same questions, would it have had a different response?

I'll bet it would have.

Let the games begin.

:corn:

we have to laugh at ourselves sometimes. Having said that, it's about time Leno was called to task for his jokes about gays

Some of you may be willing to just lay face down in the ditch and let the bashers come to you.

Most of those people are the same ones who don't have the fucking balls to even come out to their own family.

I'd guess it's because, deep down, they do believe that being gay makes them "not as good" or something as other humans on earth.

Jay Leno was supposed to be interviewing Ryan Phillippe about "Stop Loss" and instead harped on him about how awful it was to have to play a gay teenager and "how did your mother feel about that?" and "Give that camera your gayest look." He wouldn't let up and kept laughing about how making someone look "gay" makes them squirm.

Yes, we can laugh at ourselves. When the joke is funny.

Leno's gay jokes aren't funny, they're mean-spirited and meant to beat the gay community down. For those of you telling the gay community to learn to laugh at itself, maybe you can actually watch a few gay comedies and see how we're capable of laughing at ourselves.

After a while, though, I tired of having other people laughing at me over and over again with jokes like dressing up a horse in drag and saying it's a "gay horse."

Fuck that shit, I'm not willing to just be the brunt of every Leno joke going.

now strap on a fucking pair, stand up for your self and go post your picture at www.mygayestlook.com

That's just it....what IS funny about giving the camera your "gayest look"? What is funny about playing a gay role on a soap opera? It doesn't make any sense, and it isn't funny lik 95% of all Jay Leno's jokes. He made the same dumb gay jokes when James Van Der Beek was on the program to the point where David Spade had to speak up and tell Jay to leave him alone. And the same when Hal Sparks was on the program.

Though I can't say I'm surprised at who's decided to pop up in this thread.

Exactly.. but that works in our favour.

If we just ignore him, laugh at ourselves etc, people will see that it's not us with the problem, its Leno.

If we get our nickers in a twist over it, Jay can use that against us in future jokes.

Dont know what you're getting at with the last comment though....

Right, so just stay quiet while we're the butt of jokes and ridicule. Sounds right up your alley.

Oh, and i've watched many gay comedies... i find them all a load of shit that have nothing funny in them, except the usual stereotypes... (camp men, with limp wrists and squeeky voices who call everyone darlng and have loads of girls as friends.... fuck that shit).

OK.. so SOME gay comedy ruffles your little feathers, then. Got it. You can't learn to laugh at yourself? What's wrong?

Is it that you can only laugh AT the gay community and not WITH it?

Maybe if we throw in a little pedophile humor it would help?

You guys must have a sick sense of humour.

If you can find humour in someone perpetuating a negative culture towards gay people, I think you need to re-examine yourself, find out what is the root of you not being able to believe that you deserve better.

^ So you'd be fine if Jay Leno would have made a racial joke?

We arent the butt of all jokes and ridicule though. It's just you think we are.

Every element of society has the piss taken out of them... it's called having a SENSE OF HUMOUR.

The jokes never harmed anyone...

If i felt i was the butt of all jokes and ridicule, i'd be the first to say something, if i felt i was being unfairly picked on, id be right up there squaring up to the person.

Your comments about me show just how ignorant you are about me as a person. You havent the first damned clue where i'm coming from.

The fact is, i've got a sense of humour. I'm able to laugh at my self. I'm able to see the funny side of things.

It's a trait that seems to be lost on many Americans these days.

Not my observations, but of others.

When did I claim we were the butt of ALL jokes and ridicule? I never said that, so you just pulled that out of nowhere.

If you actually sat down and watched all the late night talk shows, and counted how many times a joke was made at the expense of gay people in comparison to other groups, I'm 100% sure you'd find the result in my favor, as Ellen DeGeneres so articulately pointed out weeks ago.

There's having a sense of humor, and then there's just being relentless and childish.

Laughing at ones self is certainly the sign of a person that is down to earth and has a good sense of humour, but this is entirely different. This can be likened to racist jokes in that it is people making fun of someone for their differences. He got the response he did from GLAAD because they rightfully saw this as an offensive joke that makes fun of gay people.

You're blurring lines.

The sense of humour relates to us, the relentless and childish relates to the person telling the jokes.

Yes, I know. That was the intention of my statement.

Let them be childish, most people know they're being childish. The sense of humour is for us to have, so we can laugh off his immaturity and ignorance.

It's difficult to simply laugh off immaturity and ignorance when it accounts for the living hell millions of young people face every day around the world, just for being born.

And thats exactly why Ellen said what she said on that show.

Well fella, life's a bitch.

If you dont laugh at shit, you'll cry.

I prefer to laugh.

I prefer to fight against what makes life a bitch. Getting angry about anti-gay jokes is just that.

Soil, i cant comment for the others here, but i am out to my family, and i still found this funny as fuck.

People just need to learn to laugh at themselves more.

Joe, I often disagree with you, but this time I agree, you are right on target. I will laugh even when I am uncomfortable, but I am grateful that Jay Leno thought it was important to issue an apology. So there is lots of good in this story.
