Mary J. Blige - My Life '06

Sorry, I don't see Mary Jane Blige as Blues or Jazz. Not at all. Maybe one song or two (if that), but REAL blues and jazz artists don't assimilate into to r&b and pop genres. They STAY in the blues and Jazz genre.

Betty Carter, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton ("You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog," which Elvis STOLE from her), Billie Holliday, Paula West, Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox. THOSE are blues and jazz singers. The others on here are r&B, but not true "blues" or "jazz" singers. They dabble. That's like Mahalia Jackson trying pop. Just don't happen.

Dabbling is OK - for me anyway - it is all a matter of taste

My Dad exclusively liked Jazz Music but NO VOCALS. He played the sax in HS and College and all of his LPS were instrumental jazz artists - a few vocalists that other people might consider Jazz but I don't think he did.

Also - like Rock Music or R&B or Country and any other genre there are many sub genres and variations

For instance - jazz has a ton of sub genres -

Soooo - my conclusion is that it is all good and all jazz related in the thread on some level - though, of course, anyone is welcome to disagree:)

Quincy Jones - Minnie Riperton - Leon Ware - Al Jarreau - If I Ever Lose This Heaven
