Jazz and Blues

Sorry, I don't see Mary Jane Blige as Blues or Jazz. Not at all. Maybe one song or two (if that), but REAL blues and jazz artists don't assimilate into to r&b and pop genres. They STAY in the blues and Jazz genre.

Betty Carter, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton ("You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog," which Elvis STOLE from her), Billie Holliday, Paula West, Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox. THOSE are blues and jazz singers. The others on here are r&B, but not true "blues" or "jazz" singers. They dabble. That's like Mahalia Jackson trying pop. Just don't happen.

Cabinfever responded to this quite eloquently so I'll just keep it short. No, Mary isn't a "true" jazz or blues singer and I never said that she was. The song I posted from her isn't pure jazz, but it has a strong jazz influence. Same with the other songs I posted from the other non-pure jazz and blues singers. I also posted songs from true jazz/blues artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter and Nancy Wilson. It's cool that you're a purist fan, but like cabinfever said, a bit of "dabbling" is a matter of taste. If he'd said he only wanted songs from pure jazz and blues singers then I would've only posted those songs, but he said jazz-related songs are welcome too so here we are. :)

Thanks cabin! (*8*) Who knew I had such musical kin? ;)

Billie Holiday - Gloomy Sunday

I initially thought Holiday did the best version of Gloomy Sunday but then I heard Bjork's take on it. Listen to Sinead's version, too.

The best version is Ray Charles'.

Holiday also did "You've Changed" - compare her early vs her later versions to see how much her life informed her singing. Paula Cole did a great version especially the first half of the song - just amazing.

Julie London - Blues in the Night

Grover WAshington Jr - Mister Magic

and Just the Two of Us w/Bill Withers

I LOVE Al Jarreau - one of the most devastating music artists deaths for me - he was very special talent

Make way for jazz punk and blues punk.

Julie London - I'll Remember April

Tata Vega (I love her) - Try a Little Tenderness
