I'm a huge Kennedy fan - I watched all of the hours of THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE dedicated to the family - chronological - really well done - PBS

I'm not a Kennedy hater by any means - I know the privilege, wealth, etc. ....

Bobby Kennedy IMO woulda been a great President - I see videos of him campaigning and IMO was the best among whites in connecting with blacks - at a time when it just wasn't happening

He was shot at 12:30pm Central Standard Time on November 22, 1963. I remember being in school and one teacher came into the classroom crying saying the President was in Dallas and was shot. There was an announcement on the loudspeaker a bit later.

People have said the era of Mid-Century Innocence ended when Kennedy was shot, thus ushering in the turbulent 1960's. It really did.

I was on the USS Saint Paul heading out of San Diego to meet up with other ships for an exercise that would include John Connally as an observer. Needless to say Connally didn't come.
The whole crew was stunned. All activities were put on hold.

I have always wondered if John and Robert were so good then what might have happened had Joseph lived through WW II? He was groomed from the womb to be a President. Joseph Sr only shifted to the next in line when he was forced to do so.

And of course JFK was a Navy man. I dont need anymore....... (unless your John McCain)

I imagine all of us in the world remember what we were doing when we heard the news of the killing. I have 70 years, and it still is fresh in my mind, plus the weekend and the days that followed. Very quickly, the city of New York changed the name of its international airport to honor JFK.

But if you remember, Kennedy had been warned not to ride in an open car. But did anyway because he wanted to appear confident and accessible.

At the time that he went to Texas, he was there to heal serious rifts among the Democrats there and he was probably one of the most hated men in that state by many, many Texans.

and yes, he was a hot Navy man.

His assassination was a world changing moment.

Not really jealous. she just appears snobby to me. I was jealous he grew up in a time when you had your banging on one side and your image on the other. I on the other hand have to choose between a relationship or rough momentary sex.... both are good and relationships are gooder.......

Neither can I... but 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing. Adlai Stevenson went to Texas in October of 1963 and he thought JFK should postpone his trip there until Spring. The hostility was rampant... coulda, shoulda, woulda.

Regarding the press, I was astonished how few people knew that FDR was a cripple (there's no gentle way of stating that). He was always standing tall at the podium - connoting and power and strength, although it took several aides to lift him to the podium. The press knew, but they had enough respect for FDR and the presidency that they kept it quiet, as they did with JFK's dalliances.

If JFK had four older brothers, he still would have gone into politics - he was early on, the consummate politician, ambitious as hell - independent of his father.

And of course JFK was a Navy man.

He really did rescue ten crew members from PT-109, but what he talked about mostly were the two that died. Part of the JFK mythology was that he injured his back during the rescue, but his back problems began when he was quite young.

If anyone is interested, there was an interview with Jackie Kennedy and Theodore H. White (author of The Making of the President, 1960) for Life Magazine very soon after the assassination. It might be in Ms. Kennedy's new book.

Every November 22nd is a very sad occasion... that which might have been.

The Texas Democratic Party during that time was divided between what we call today as "Yellow Dog Democrats," and "Republicans/Conservatives."

It was the Conservative who hated him.

Though JFK is revered today, things were different then.

Dallas, Texas is my hometown. I never knew how my hometown was viewed until I was old enough to travel outside of Texas.

I became ashamed to tell anyone where I was from.

"Dallas? The City that Murdered a President?"

Japanese when I was in the Coast Guard, "Oooooh, Kennedy bang, bang."

In the time that I was growing up in Dallas, the City literally began to tear itself down. Completely destroying its historic buildings, as if to try to rebuild itself from that image.

I served on the County Historical Commission that helped to secure Dealey Plaza, and to put it on the National Registry of Historic Places.

If you're ever in Dallas, and have the free time to spend a day or two, make sure to visit Dealey Plaza and take the time to visit The Sixth Floor Museum.

As museums go it's probably one of the best museums that chronical the events of November 22, 1963.

On this day every year, the plaza is still flooded with flowers of those who remember.

I heard somewhere on TV last nite that National Geographic has made a documentary about the assassination. There was a bystander video made when they turned onto the street right in front of the bookstore. They did some enhancements and enlargements showing Oswald in the window. They say if the video went a little longer you would be able to see the shot. It shows on Sun morning although there is a docu on History channel last nite. I don't know if it is the same.

I don't think that the City could be faulted for the assassination any more than Saudi Arabia could for 9-11, but there was undeniably a malignant atmosphere being created by some factions in the state by late 1963.

I hate to admit this but I was one that blamed Dallas for the assassination. I've grown up since, but I lived in Houston until 1991 and everyone I knew hated Dallas gays. A lot of it was the Oilers vs Cowboys thing, but the funny thing is, when I would go to SA for Fiesta and met some Dallas queens, everything was fine and we all had fun.
Go figure.

With today's 24 hour cable news and reality TV, it is difficult to imagine the impact of constant coverage by all three networks (yes, back then that was all there was) for that four days ending with the funeral or the horror of seeing Lee Harvey Oswald gunned down on live television. I agree (as will most people of my generation) with the sentiment that that was when America lost its innocence.

As a side note: my very first post on JUB (LMAO at the time) was on the 40th anniversary of JFK's death.
