this is an amazing album. i have always loved her. with her twangy appalachian vocals and harp thumping. but, her voice is getting more trained and controlled with each album. and i like that. i love the ways she sings on MEM. but, i love how beautiful and mature her voice is becoming. while still keeping that slight edge to it. three cds. each running about forty five minutes. and not a stinker in the bunch. not even an okay song. all are great. i didn't know what to expect. but, she did not disappoint. and fullfilled and surpassed all my expectations with this one. and i think just the casual listener can enjoy songs on this album. they are not all an acquired taste. i say this is the most excited i have been about an album in a long time. and it is the best album released in a long time. i am seeing her in concert in march. and i cannot wait.

Plus, her lyrics are astounding.

It's such a huge album and most of the songs are pretty similar so i haven't gotten a real impression of it yet, but I really like '81 and Kingfisher so far.

Joanna Newsom is notoriously mysterious; she's not the type you'll find Tweeting about her life, or even giving very many interviews. She seems to exist outside of the traditional music industry hype cycle, to a certain degree. So it's a nice surprise to discover that she will perform on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" tonight, March 5. Newsom will perform "Soft as Chalk".

Still listening to this album. Just brilliant.

I miss her Milk Eyed Mender sound but this is still great.

Both Joanna Newsom and Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold seem like they come from some magical fantasyland populated by unicorns and wizards and benevolent, non-people-eating dragons. But whatever their origins, we now know that both Newsom and Pecknold own functioning car radios. At their show together in Oakland last night, Pecknold and Newsom covered the countrified Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow duet "Picture"-- one of the last songs we'd expect these two to know.

And, surprise surprise, they nailed it. Watch the fan-recorded video below, via Pitchfork writer Matthew Perpetua's Fluxtumblr.

Other big things happening in Newsom-land: On August 11 (next Wednesday), she'll once again grace late-night network TV as the musical guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live". And on November 23, she'll play a show at the hallowed Carnegie Hall in New York City. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice, and sing like a mythical wood-sprite!

Wow. Really unique voice.

Just found out she's related to HOT HOT San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom!
