hello guys,

I need the fitness experts to help me out with this one. I'm 22, I'm a boy, I weight 152 pounds (69 kgs) and I'm 5'7, which means I'm on the slim side. I've always been slim, I eat whatever I want and I've never had a problem with my weight. About 3 years ago I started working out with an horizontal bar, gain a bit weight and muscle and did that for 2 years, but I had to stop last march due to surgery on my chest. I had pectus excavatum and now it is corrected with a metal bar I have inside me.

So here's the deal, I can't exercise right now. I can't lift weights or make any kind of effort whatsoever. But I want to workout, I want to be active. So I started jogging today for an hour and a half, did jog the entire time though. The deal is I don't want to lose weight, so I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. I'm hoping to have a bit more definition in my abs, but I don't know if I should keep jogging if I don't wanna lose weight. And should I keep eating whatever the hell I want like I always do?

i dont know a whole lot about it, but i know that swimming is a good way to get back into things and tones everything

Didn't jog the entire time, that's what I meant.

jogging is a good way to keep up fitness. you may lose weight. you certainly won't lose muscle and it could help with defining abs, which can be done only by reducing overall body fat. just make sure you don't try to do too much too soon or you'll potentially run into problems with shin splints or stress fractures.

You can walk instead of running if you're worried about weight loss. Generally though, if you're eating a healthy diet, aerobic exercise like running will trim fat not muscle.

Swimming is a good choice.

You might also ask your physician if you can use resistance bands. They will allow you to work out but they are not as strenuous as weights.

You should eat your normal diet during your recovery.

I could be wrong, but I think jogging is a great way to lose weight if you have weight to be lost.
I started jogging three years ago when I weighed 110kg, and now I weigh about 70kg (I'm 5'9"). I've continued jogging throughout the three years and I have done no other form of exercise. I have been at my current weight for the longest time since I started losing.
I think that jogging will not make you lose any weight given the fact that you are already at a healthy weight and don't have anything to lose. If you were overweight, it would make you slim.

Yep jogging will help you lose weight. It also gets your heart pumping too, is that a problem for you with your operation?

If you dont want to lose weight, but remain in shape, try weights, do sit ups, crunches, press ups, warm ups etc.

Thank you all for the info.

No my heart pumping isn't really a problem. And about the exercises, I pretty much can't do anything with my chest.

i don't know if it's right for everyone but i can personally vouch for swimming as a good way to get exercise to lose weight. This past spring and summer i lost 60 pounds doing just that and eating correctly. I was very limited to what i could do because i had a rather large lateral hernia across my abdomen a little larger than a grapefruit. I've recently had that repaired and am anxiously awaiting my oppurtunity to exercise and work out like i havn't been able to do for several years now. But yes i believe Swimming is a very good way to lose weight and burn calories.

Hi guys, two question please:
Does not jogging hurt knees, especially of overweighted people?
Is swimming still good to do when I know only breast style?

Breast style is fine especially if you do it right.. It would be better if you knew other styles so you can work all of your muscles

A stress injury can occur anytime you overwork any part of your body. Running can be tough on the knees, ankles and shins. But the same can be said of walking, if you walk long enough distances.

Swimming, even the breaststroke, is good exercise. But it would also be a good opportunity to learn some other strokes- like the crawl and more practical strokes that you can use when you're swimming in the ocean or lakes.
