not many would advocate what he is
He wants to be President
He is backing a position that is not popular with Americans who are sick of being in Iraq. Of a position that has been attacked by the Dems and the media. Every day the drumbeat says "get out of Iraq" - the details and aftermath are conveniently skipped. The aftermath of a pullout would be devastating to Iraq, to the Middle East, to the free world. Terrorists would be emboldened, Iran would be emboldened .................... We would not have credibility
Back to McCain
I don't agree with him on everything but unlike most all modern day politicians he is putting his beliefs/principles ahead of his wants.
I love the guy
He is very much like Joe Lieberman who got torpedoed by special interest groups in the CT primary but DID NOT change his views. He got re-elected
McCain is to be commended for his stance - whether u agree with him or not.

As someone from Arizona I agree with everything you said. His days of being a maverick are long over, and I still don't understand how he is still so popular.
