My father is a Vietnam Vet and he's still good friends with a lot of people he served with over there. They always supported McCain in his presidential bids because of the fact that he was a POW and that he new first hand the "Horrors of War". Listening to them talk yesterday afternoon they saw very strong similarties between the war in Iraq and the war in Vietnam.

1. Both were largely unprovoked!

2. Both were against a greater enemy then the people: Communism now Terrorism.

3. Both were extremely unpopular amongst the soldiers and citizens.

4. Both wars saw US Soldiers dying for unjust causes.

They all seemingly dropped their support for McCain. It's hard to believe that someone who disliked Bush so much and was so (anti war in general) has now blindly given his overwhelming support to Bush and the Iraq War. I tend to agree with them. I can't believe how McCain has become seemingly "housebroken" by the GOP. He's probably doing all of this now so he'll be their favorite in the 08' elections.

His supporters can try and use the excuse that he's trying to avoid a larger war in the future if Iraq is left unstable, but that's not why he's supporting the war or Bush now. He's simply the lap dog. Just another show piece for the party. "Here John go out and sell the troop increase"..... and "Here John go on tv and tell everyone what a good job our president is doing.

I now look forward to all choices in 08 not named McCain or Kerry, oh yea and god forbid another BUSH......... You know Jeb is waiting in the wings.

What's really remarkable is how he was savaged by the GOP during the 2000 presidential elections. Why he hasn't dumped his affiliation with them is unbelievable and indicates to me what a disingenuous man he is.

Re: John McCain, Traitor?

Sorry, Madman, I had to spellcheck your post. It was driving me crazy. Remember, i before e.

I don't think anyone can so far as to use the term "traitor" to describe McCain, because that's way out there on a limb. What I will concede to is that he's recently become one of Bush's favorite lapdogs.

The really sad part is that the man does know the horrors of war--especially from a POW standpoint. I can't judge how his support is among other Vietnam vets, but, I'm sad to report, my father is still staunchly in the Bush "fight them there" camp. I don't understand how he fails to see the parallels to his own experience.

I agree, after the primary season I expected him to jump parties or at least go independent. They treated him awful and now he's sucked it up and become a "good little boy".

I'm not calling him at TRAITOR to his nation, but he has turned his back on where he stood only 6 years ago. He has over the past few months also turned his back on all of his original supporters..... seemingly to try and court the Bush supporters for the next election.

Re: John McCain, Traitor?

I'd be curious to hear more about what your dad and his buddies have to say about Iraq and what's going on today, because these politicians, no matter where you live, are all bullshit artists.

Re: John McCain, Traitor?

"Traitor" is over the top and I am not sure of his "war experience". He dropped bombs on North Vietnam from high altitude and spent many years in a Vietnamese prison in horrendous conditions.

I have always liked his independent/populist streak, but I think he has always believed in military solutions. He still believes that the US could have won in Vietnam if troops were sent into North Vietnam and a sustained bombing campaign in the North had been launched.

He voted for torture. Calls Jerry Falwell a messenger of peace. Told Bush that it was okay that they smeared his family. Now he pushed for the troop surge. He's old, stupid, and has no backbone period. He flips his position every three seconds. He's awful.

Re: John McCain, Traitor?

I won't call him a traitor, but I used to be a supporter and now there's no way, for the reasons people have already said above. They fucked him over in 2000 and now he has to carry water for these same people? To the extent of signing off on torture, even though he himself spent time in a POW camp? How he can even look at himself in the mirror I don't know.

However, he's hitched his star to the giant boulder known as 'The Surge', which absolutely 100% guarantees that his presidential aspirations are OVER. The only republican who could possibly win in 2008 will now be an antiwar republican. I suggest Ron Paul, who has stood up for the Constitution and principals of freedom and democracy from day one. Okay he's running but I'm dreaming, maybe a Chuck Hagel? That's IF a repub even has a chance, hell, I bet Carter could win again by the time 2008 rolls around.

Re: John McCain, Traitor?

I predict that McCain will flip and flop until he gets endorsed by a big wig in the religious right. Bush would never have been elected in 2000 if he hadn't won the SC GOP primary. After winning in NH, McCain was predicted to win in SC, but Bush went to Bob Jones University and sucked up to its president who who makes Dr. James Dobson look like a liberal. The president of Bob Jones then endorsed Bush and the people of SC followed like a flock of sheep. McCain knows that he has to get a similar endorsement, so he will flip and flop until he does.

Re: John McCain, Traitor?

It's sad because I used to really respect him. I'd love to talk to him for just a minute and tell him how disappointed I am. If he was just an ass I wouldn't be sad, but he had so much potential, and now he has sold his soul to get the presidency and will lose both.

Chance,

It's obvious in may of your posts that you read selectively. Once again, it has nothing to do with him being a traitor to his country. He's just become a complete sellout to the people who once supported him.

Diary - I get your nuance - did before and do now

We're at war with Iraq

John McCain is a decorated veteran, one who honored his country and was mistreated as a POW

John McCain, Traitor? is not a viable thread

and using the term Traitor is just not good

Plain as I can be

Actually, I agree. I'll modify the thread title to better reflect the sentiment of the thread.
