To be clear, it isn't an NIH paper - or even NIH funded. It's an article that actually appears in (or will appear in) another journal (Sexuality & Culture). Pub Med is sort of a clearinghouse for major peer-reviewed journals that deal with issues of the sociences (physical, medical, and behavioral), and Sexuality & Culture is one of the journals that they pull from. It's kind of interesting the paper got accepted - Sex and Culture tends to be way more empricial (i.e. big quantitative studies), and this is more of what is called a thematic analysis (and in journals as stuffy as S&C can be, they tend not to get printed).

Brennan is pretty well known in the porn studies field (yes it is a field) and he publishes a lot in the journal Porn Studies (yes, it's a journal) about gay porn and barebacking. Admittedly, Rapid isn't the first specific porn star he's analyzed, so this isn't out of the question; he cites his other paper on a porn star from a few years ago.
