can we give her her 10s now? Been waiting since The High Road.

And yes that was a whistle note, Mariah isn't the only singer who can reach that register, though its also. understandably unexpected treat from an (contr?)alto.*

She's so gifted I don't even mind the redundancy of a music video parodying depression med commercials, in a song about anxiety, on an album about mental health.

[Verse 1]
I wish that I could shut you off, keep you muted
I wish I knew the difference between your voice and mine
And mine
I'm always puttin' out the fires that you started
And every time I look around, it just looks bad on me
On me

[Pre-Chorus]
You only show up when it's inconvenient
Always talkin' loud, fill my head with lies
Keepin' me home, keepin' me from leavin'
You love just to take my time

[Chorus]
Why you hate me, (Hate me), hate me?
All you do is suffocate me, can't breathe
And if I could choose (Ooh)
It'd be mе without you (Ooh)
You drain me (Drain me), drain me
All you do is try to changе me (Change me) lately
And if I could choose (Ooh)
It'd be me without you (Ooh)

[Verse 2]
Ooh, it's crazy, crazy, crazy (Crazy, crazy, crazy)
That's how you make me feel
Oh, your power is amazin' (Power is amazin')
I don't recognize myself, no, no (No, no, no, no, no, no)
No, no (Ooh)

[Pre-Chorus]
You only show up when it's inconvenient
Always talkin' loud, fill my head with lies
Keepin' me home, keepin' me from leavin'
You love just to take my time

[Chorus]
Why you hate me, (Hate me), hate me?
All you do is suffocate me, can't breathe
And if I could choose (Ooh)
It'd be me without you (Ooh), oh
You drain me (Drain me), drain me
All you do is try to change me (Change me) lately
And if I could choose (Ooh)
It'd be me without you (Ooh)

[Bridge]
(Oh, oh-oh)
(Oh, oh-oh)
Why won't you let me go? (Oh, oh-oh)
Go (Ooh)
Ooh (Oh, oh-oh)
Oh no, no, no (Oh, oh-oh)
Why won't you let me go? (Oh, oh-oh)
Go (Ooh)

*I only have cursory familiarity with vocal classification, her tessitura is definitely lower but I've read someone call her a mezzo soprano, but her voice loses potency in the upper register so that doesn't seem right.

This is her true vibe. For years she's teetered the line between jazz and radio-friendly pop but now she's going balls to the wall D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, incense burning, bona-fide soul music. That styling has always been in her voice but now she's gbeing view the freedom to steer her production away from "what's on the radio now" to "ethereal space experimental sounds that pair great with weed and a quiet environment."

You do know this site isn’t frequented by 13 year old girls, right?

Sorry to render your retort nonsensical but considering themes of depression sex and drug abuse her target audience is clearly grown adults. I don't know many American teens who like lofi and jazz music.

I will refrain from making a witty remark about the emotional maturity of 13 year old girls and that of the members of this site. Maybe the volume and popularity of stuffed cabbage/fart/shit jokes gave me the wrong impression.

If her target audience is 13 year old girls, someone needs to tell her before she records another Kathleen Battles cover. Operatic negro spirituals aren't really poppin with the kids.

She certainly has a register and range.

Terrible singer, terrible song.

I came in thinking it was that JoJo Siwa mess so at least i was spared that.

Oh thank God, I was dying to know your opinion on this Grammy winner, youngest solo act to hit #1 who just won 2nd place on Masked Singer. How sad, all that acclaim, all those standing ovations, a fan base that stuck with her through 10 years of radio silence, but she hasn't won YOUR approval yet and I'm so sure it eats her up every night. #standstrongjojo #maybesomeday

I have legitimately never heard of this artist before. While it's definitely not the style of music I'd likely ever choose to listen to I certainly wouldn't ask someone to change it if they put it on. May keep an eye out going forward, but slower stuff like this just doesn't really appeal to me.

Stupid range, right? :gogirl: she used to smoke and is on a holistic-living course, I imagine this is going to improve her instrument, like when Pink stopped smoking cigarettes during her pregnancy and suddenly started hitting C6's. I'm always fascinated by females with lower voices, and I must say the bottom of her voice is like honey.

You must be very young, her career began in the TRL days, back when you could actually hear music on MTV, like, during the day. She had a few hits at age 12 then label politics (aaliyah's uncle, same label that kept aaliyahs music from streaming apps/sites til this year) stalled her career for a decade, throughout which she released a bevvy of mistakes singles and EPs to keep her devoted fanbase from storming the castle.

Here's a more lighthearted offering, she's no Mya but she's an OK dancer.

No, I'm not young at all. I think it's more likely that music in particular really didn't have a big place in my life until later in life, and it being more the type of stuff I wasn't into.

Also she doesn't get a lot of mainstream love, nobody knows who she is  she even wrote about it, gotta love an artist who doesn't take themselves too seriously (the lyrics sprung from a freestyle she wrote with friends about all the unsolicited advice she gets from fans and haters about her lackluster career)

"Joanna"

We go back a long time
I've been riding with you since day one
Oh I, remember we were just kids
You were singing, winning, so young and innocent
But these days
You don't really sound the same
Do you still have the same range
That you did when you were 14, girl?
I don't really know
You should date somebody famous
That'll probably put you on the A-list
That'll probably get you on them playlists
Stop you being so damn underrated, oh
What is goin' on, Joanna?
What is goin' on, Joanna?
