Ok so Monday I fell down the stairs and landed on my foot and felt a pop in my foot/ankle well I called my podiatrist and was able to get an appointment today after 2 xrays it is confirmed that I broke my 5th metatarsal in the Jones region thus a Jones Fracture. I might need surgery on this, I mean I won't be put out, it'll be twilight, but it's still SURGERY! And it is spooking me! Have any of you had a Jones Fracture? How was the healing I mean I'm definitely in pain I'm just hoping the cast i'm in for the next 2 weeks will work and I'll heal!

The Podiatrist probably explained to you that normally, fractures of the fingers and toes don't require surgery unless they are severe. Jones fracture is an exception because of the location and its slowness in healing. Most often surgery is needed when healing is still slow in spite of casting and immobilization.

If you haven't had surgery before, it may seem scary but this surgery is considered minor. The preparation and recovery room time are often longer than the surgery itself. Foot surgery can have post-operative pain- primarily because there tends to be swelling, there are a lot of nerve endings in the foot and patients too often try to resume activities when they should be resting their foot after surgery.

Well still im trying to stay off it save for going to bed, the bathroom and the couch. I am hoping eating more protein and greens and drinking more milk will help boost the possible healing! Any insight to what I can do because my big toe on that foot is killing me like it is incredibly stiff, its most likely from how I hobble about in my boot.

You should mention this to the podiatrist. You shouldn't be having more pain. It may be that the boot isn't fitted correctly. Or it may be a problem with the big toe that needs to be addressed with taping or a pad.

I had a bone spur on that toe but had a few injections about a year & a 1/2 ago could that've popped up again? I wouldn't be developing a bunion right?

Bone spurs and bunions are different things.

A bone spur is an area that has suffered inflammation or injury. The body overcompensates for what it thinks is a major injury by adding bone to an area that doesn't need repair. The reason cortisone injections work is that they reduce the inflammation and make it less likely that the body will perceive there's a bone injury there that needs to be repaired.

A bunion is a skeletal deformity that causes an abnormal angle in the bones in the foot that attach to the big toe.

If you've had inflammation in that area in the past, that would be another reason to talk with the podiatrist. It may be as simple as just adding additional padding to the boot. The podiatrist is better equipped to know what needs to be done since he's seen your x-rays and he can examine the boot to see what needs to be done.

Much like my std scare last year I jumped the gun! The big toe joint is feeling much much better and the pain in the fracture is down but still there here's hoping that a week from today everything is healing fine! Will post an update next week!

Unfortunately I fell down my stairs and landed right on concrete.

I don't think I've ever heard of the term Jones Fracture. Sounds a little bit painful! Were you running down the stairs, or just some freak "accident?" The worse sprain I ever had, I was in my early 20's. I was rushing down the hotel room stairs to try to get back to class on time. I twisted my ankle on the landing between the two floors. It hurt so bad. I made it thru the rest of the classes but then asked an instructor how to get to the hospital. I waited for a long time to get thru x-ray and to see a doctor. It was a Friday and I still had a 4 hour drive home. I made it about 90 minutes and decided to get a motel room. It was snowing and a little icy so I had a good enough excuse that my job picked up the motel expense. I spent the next week in classes on crutch(s).

Nope walking down the stairs and next I know step 3 to concrete it was pretty painful a good majority of the pain has seemed to subside, but im still trying to stay off it! Side note today in not so specific words my mom let me know that my broken foot is a lot harder on her than it is on me. She's a narcissist with martyr complex but thats a story for another thread.

Ok went for my recheck today x ray shows signs of healing still wants me off of it and doing nothing too taxing! Also wants me taking a calcium supplement refilled the anti inflammatory pill he gave me next recheck is in 3 weeks!

UPDATE: it got worse! so in the 3 weeks since I've seen him it went from being like 75% through to 100% through and through! He's got me on crutches and the walking boot now and surgery is still on the table! Recheck and more imaging 3 weeks!

So in the span of less than 24 hours the crutches cut my armpits and bruised my hands and wrists. Went out today and rented a knee scooter/walker so much easier!!! Got it for a month only 90.00 not terrible as i almost broke my ass several times trying to go to the can

That sure sucks! So if you are by yourself how do you get the scooter up or down a flight of stairs? Also the $90 rental sure sounds high, but I've never priced one. But a couple years ago I was having some serious back pain. I found one of those wheeled walkers (with brakes and a seat) on sale for less than $40 on amazon.

Well thankfully I'm not by myself got my parents here, of course with my mom I might as well be by myself, this is harder on her afterall than it is on myself! Also thankfully we have a duplex so even though its a whole house in our apartment we have no stairs except to go to the basement or to apt 2. I was in the basement 3 times when i thought I was doing better haven't been down there since. My day literally consists of waking up, scootin to the loo, cant take my scooter in there so I hobble lightly, Scoot to the couch where I stay, til I scoot to bed. Every once in a while I scoot to my bedroom in the middle of the day for a tug, thats it! I haven't been out of my house since Dec 23 will next go out on January 11 for more imaging and my podiatrist appointment! I thought my life was meaningless before ooh boy this takes the cake!

Sorry for your problem. Hope it gets better sooner than later. You seem to be doing what you need to and are able to do. Let us know how it goes for you. I don't think there is anything I can do for you.

Went to podiatrist today more x rays thinks my toe pain was pseudo gout from the calcium im to drink more water to flush it out! Still pretty broken, but there is a calcium callus there and thats an indicator of healing (how ever SLOW)! BUT the gap is still there! He said there was also a bone stimulator that I could wear at night but insurance wont cover it until my break is 90 days old which with a Jones Fracture will take a long time to begin with. I think I'll call BCBS and see what they would cover and what I'd be on the hook for! Recheck 2 weeks surgery still on the table!

UPDATE: went to podiatrist today and xrays were taken looks like I have a good bridge going the ends are open but I'm hoping they heal, I am desperately trying to avoid surgery especially now as he would have to go in and re break it uh uh. Bone stimulator he was talking about might be around $4000.00 that aint gonna happen I'll just wait it out and be a stubborn Taurus! I have to call BCBS and see now that I have a diagnosis code for them to look into as well as the company that they use. So here's hoping i'll get more good news in 2 weeks-Happy Valentine's day!
