In any case, my tips were crap! I only managed 2 out of 8

I was in Melbourne towards the end of April when the Ben Cousins thing blew up. The Melbourne Press and some of the football people wanted him hanged, drawn and quartered. They wanted him thrown out of football. They wanted him ostracized and sent to hell. The fact that he had never been charged with anything, had never failed a drug test (and he had had a few!), and had never faced a tribunal of any type was "beside the point". The fact of the matter is that great champions from anywhere other than Victoria are hated by the one-eyed Vic press.

One can look at Benny's return from a couple of different angles, and the Eastern press took the pessimistic, negative view that the reception given to Cousins when he came onto the ground at the 6 minute mark "sends a poor message to kids and that drugs are OK".

Just as easily, one could take a much more positive view. Benny's return showed that you can hit rock bottom and fight back. It takes perseverance, a lot of help from peers and family, and just a little bit of guts. The next four quarters showed that he does have a future after his wayward and irresponsible behaviour.

Surely he showed that you can fight back, that you can overcome problems associated with substance abuse. Isn't this the message the press should be pushing? That there is a future after booze and drugs.

Since his downfall 3 months ago, the message has been pushed that drugs are NOT OK. This message has been pushed by the WCE, the AFL and Ben's dad, Brian. I think it is time to look at the positives. He went through a lot. Ben and his family, and his close friends went through a lot of shame. It is time to move on. It is time to allow him to get on with what he does best - playing football.
