Judd cleared of eye-gouging
News
WEST Coast star Chris Judd has been cleared of a charge of eye-gouging at the AFL Tribunal.
The decision means Judd is free to play in Saturday's match against the Kangaroos at Subiaco and remains eligible to win the Brownlow Medal, for which he is the favourite.
Judd had been charged with eye-gouging Hawthorn's Campbell Brown during Saturday's match at Launceston.
But Judd, Brown and officiating umpire Brett Rosebury all gave evidence that no eye-gouging had taken place.
Judd stayed in Perth for the hearing and gave evidence to the tribunal via video link.
He said after the hearing: "I'm very relieved with the result.
"We vehemently denied the charges and we are relieved that the jury agreed with us on that.
"Now I am just really looking forward to taking on the Kangaroos this week."
Judd told the tribunal that after Brown climbed on top of him and put his elbow in his ribs, he had reached for his neck to try to push him off.
"My fingers were on his face, but it was a pushing, not a pulling motion," Judd said.
He said he was certain he had not at any stage put his fingers in Brown's eye or eye socket, despite not being able to see where they were.
"I have perfectly good feeling in my fingers, I'm perfectly aware if I'm touching someone's nose, their lips, their eyes, with my fingers," he said.
The tribunal was shown vision of the incident and also played audio in which Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell could be heard shouting "that's eye-gouging".
Rosebury said he submitted an incident report to the match review panel because of the allegation made by Mitchell.
But he said he had a clear view of the incident at the time and did not believe it warranted a report or even a free kick.
He said of Brown's reaction of clutching for his eye afterwards, that "it seemed that he was possibly playing for a free kick".
Brown also gave evidence in support of Judd, saying he felt contact to his cheek and around his eyebrow, but not to his eye.
However, he admitted under cross-examination that he felt pain in his right eye and put his hand to his face to check for blood.
He also denied a claim by Judd that he laughed afterwards and said "I nearly got you with that one Juddy".
A report from Hawthorn's doctor Peter Baquie, stating that Brown suffered no injury or subsequent ill effects from the incident, was also tendered.
The jury deliberated for about 12 minutes before finding the charge unproven.
Had it been sustained, Judd would have been suspended for one match.
Earlier this year, Fremantle's Jeff Farmer was banned for six matches for eye-gouging Kangaroo Daniel Pratt in the pre-season, with a penalty loading because of his poor prior record contributing to that penalty.
And Melbourne's Ben Holland was reprimanded for making contact to the face of Western Bulldogs captain Brad Johnson in round seven, after grappling with Johnson in an incident that injured his eye.
