  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

JUB should cover it's logo in support..

I think this entire thing has gone way too far.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/wikipedia-editors-sites-planned-blackout-225958842.html

And many Wikipedia editors have said it could damage the site's credibility. It could essentially backfire.

it's only 24 hours, Wiki is convenient, but Google is still open to search other info. It's important issue that we should all stand behind. One day we may not be able to post pictures here because of it, or post any info from online articles.

And Wikipedia teases you, the homepage lets you search, then after seeing the your article for a split second it warps you to the blackout. SOPA is already dead isn't it? One more to go..

The site would change drastically, you also wouln't be able to post links to other online resources, such as tube sites or image hosting galleries. We simply don't have the capacity to check all of the links that you guys post, and JUB would have to gain permission from hundreds of porn sites that you guys currently post images from to allow those images to remain. Then of course there are the implications of blogs and their content and linking to us. Total nightmare!

International support is probably going to be thin on the ground due to the ability of Americans to be able to whip themselves up into a frenzy over an ant climbing up a wall, and the rest of the world simply wondering what those 'crazy yanks' are up to now.

From the sounds of it, SOPA is dead in the water and PIPA will follow suit, however they certainly won't be the last attempts to further regulate the internet by the US or to make the 'land of the free' less free than much of the rest of the Western world.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

As usual so well said and written , like you i am a bit bemused at the lack of
publicity . offtopic:

JUB has my 100% support for any measures to increase awareness of the evils of SOPA and censorship in general.

I forgot to say that whilst I agree that Hollywood, music producers, the adult industry etc are right in their pursuit of piracy and copyright infingement, these bills, as they are worded, are open to way too much abuse, and THIS is the problem. The most frightening part is that it allows the US Government to censor, block, and bring to court individuals and businesses. What the bills should REALLY do is make it easier for individuals and businesses to bring lawbreakers to justice. The minute that your government is censoring the internet, is the minute that you're no better as a country than China. It is a massive infringement on your First Amendment.

Unless amended to prevent abuse, these bills aren't just using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, they're virtually nuking it.

As for Wiki blacking out their pages, whilst it's pissed me off no end today - I have to admit that I wouldn't want to be them if they have to check every single one of the 'citation' links in each of their articles!!!

I won't pretend to be an expert on American politics, but doesn't the Sopa bill overextend a little in regards to what it was meant to do? It seems that it aims to go beyond preventing piracy (to which I agree must be done), but if it infringes on freedom of expression and freedom of the press...? Are there not constitutional protections in the United States against such legislation?

Oh and if anyone cares for Chrome and Firefox users if you hit ESC while the English page of Wiki is loading then the BLACK OUT wont load and you may use it as you see fit.

You can also disable Javascript for most other sites.

Enjoy.

Shame on JUB!!!

And yet here you are, on JUB like a hypocrite.

You know, a real effective protest would be to not log onto the internet at all, rather than telling sites what they should do in solidarity.

International support is probably going to be thin on the ground due to the ability of Americans to be able to whip themselves up into a frenzy over an ant climbing up a wall, and the rest of the world simply wondering what those 'crazy yanks' are up to now.

If they make it problematic for Americam web hosters to operate, those people will just move to servers in other free-er parts of the world. Americans will be shut off from those services, but not the rest of the world.

Actually Pig the content would shift but it wouldnt be the same. A great deal of the stolen and reproduced content that is all over the web is generated in the United States.

Could be kind of cool to see what the ROW would come up with for content.

The form as envisioned by the industry will never pass. There will be some copyright protective legal smegma passed but the only thing that will protect that industries content will be a technological defeat of theft.

^OR, you could stop quoting it so it could eventually get the hint and go away. Or at least revert to humanity, as we in the know, know it's an act.
