JUB's CE&P Good Articles Thread

Gentlemen, and I'm being generous in using that term, the OP wanted to create a thread wherein you might post a link to a story that you found interesting. We do not allow just pointing a link to a story without a some context. So, write a sentence or two as to what you found interesting about the story and then post the link.

And this interpersonal back and forth needs to stop immediately. If it doesn't, we'll start citing people for doing so.

I like the idea of this thread as a good way to share stories of interest. Contribute in a positive, intelligent way or have the common decency to keep you comments to your self.

Thanks.

Sex suit names Philadelphia Archdiocese

The attorney for sex abuse victims in the civil fraud cases against the Archdiocese of Milwaukee sued the Philadelphia Archdiocese on Monday, citing damning grand jury reports that led to criminal charges there last week.

Isn't it tragic that the tales of systemic abuse of children at the hands of christian priests just never seems to end?

At least 1000 years of institutionalized rape.

I hope they throw the book at these evil men.

The Good Book. The heavy one they keep on the lectern.

Basically, yes. The history behind it is long, but nations basically realize they have to do things that way. It does sometimes result in a tit-for-tat, though; the USSR and US used to play that game: a diplomat gets caught spying and gets expelled, so the other country finds an excuse to expel another diplomat. If the first country is upset at that, they'll do the same thing, and back and forth till someone decides enough is enough.

AARP's stranglehold on our politics means that the budget will remain in the red for years and years to come. What a shame.

http://www.newsweek.com/2011/02/20/who-rules-america-retired-people.html

I keep looking ahead and thinking about the benefits that joining AARP would bring. Then I look at the idiocy they engage in, and wonder if I want to lend the little weight of my membership to that idiocy. And most of the people I know my age feel the same, even if they have no good retirement prospects.

I think there's plenty of room for reform in SS spending, starting with changing COLAs from a percentage of what you get to a percentage of the poverty level -- a flat sum for everyone. I can't find the figures at the moment, but I remember seeing that that single reform to COLAs would slow the growth of SS spending by something in the low double-digits. Then you throw in means testing, and I'd do it sufficiently that the system could be loaded on the bottom such that no one has to retire on less than the poverty level (presently a huge portion of people retire on less than the equivalent of minimum wage).

Of course we don't have to have a budget deficit; if the plundering class who thrive on trickle-up economics were taxed their fair share, we could kill the deficit right now, and if they were patriotic enough to care, we could start seriously paying down the debt.

It must suck to be a neo-Nazi. To hate people for something they have no control over. To have an overwhelming sense of unfounded paranoia while the world goes about its business.

These losers are in my state too. In fact, the losers that came to take my flat screen off my bedroom wall were probably some of this trash. Spider web on elbow?

So Long, Chicken Little: The 9 most annoying sky-is-falling clichés in American foreign policy

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2011/02/22/so_long_chicken_little?page=0,1

They should add a LL favorite to their list to round it out to ten false cliches. "We're fighting for your freedom." And who exactly is trying to take away my right to free speech in Iraq or Afghanistan? What's so frustrating about this bullshit cliche is that people just say it and use it to shut someone up. And no one ever thought out the accuracy of the statement.
