In a well reasoned opinion, a New Jersey State court judge ordered the state to begin to recognize same sex marriages. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/27/new-jersey-gay-marriage-_n_4004723.html She ruled that the Windsor case, which struck down DOMA, granted federal benefits to same sex married couples that New Jersey residents with Civil Unions could not obtain. Therefore, same sex married couples in New Jersey were not receiving equal treatment as heterosexual married couples, in violation of an earlier NJ State Supreme Court case.

It's unfortunate that Governor Fat Fuck vetoed the same sex marriage legislation that the state legislature passed. Republicans continue to be on the wrong side of history on every issue.

NJ Judge Orders Statewide Marriage Equality!

This is huge, guys!

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...judge-orders-same-sex-marriage-statewide?lite

A New Jersey state court judge ruled that the state must permit same-sex couples to get married.

The ruling comes in a lawsuit brought by six same-sex couples and their children. They argued that it's unfair treatment to allow them to only enter into civil unions, now that the Supreme Court has decided the federal government must recognize same-sex marriages in the states where they are legal.

"This news is thrilling. We argued that limiting lesbians and gay men to civil union is unfair and unconstitutional, and now the Court has agreed,” Hayley Gorenberg, Lambda Legal deputy legal director, said in a statement. The organization advocated on behalf of the Garden State Equality organization and six same-sex couples.

Marriage begins in New Jersey on Oct. 21.

IN YOUR FACE, CHRIS CHRISTIE!

Christie's a fool for vowing to appeal. Didn't the state Supreme Court already order that same-sex couples had to get all the same privileges and benefits that opposite-sex couples get? So long as gays are stuck with civil unions, that order is made void -- so the conclusion is a slam-dunk: civil unions have to become marriages.

Re: NJ Judge Orders Statewide Marriage Equality!

......and they will appeal............fuckers.

anything you throw in his face he will eat ---but deep below his fat you will find a heart and I don't believe he is really anti marriage but as another northeast republican who wants to be president---fatso has to take this stand---with the scary morons running the party if he were to get the presidential nomination--I'd eat pussy.:p

The only reason Christie is making a stink about it is to appeal to his base. He's thinking only of his political career, nothing else. Who cares if he damages lives, just as long as his career thrives.

It's great to see judges are doing the work the elected republicans are supposed to be doing.

The legislature had a chance to do the right thing and failed. Now we see Christie simply delaying the inevitable.
I hope the legislature simply overides his veto but if they don't,the courts will do it for them and without the religious protections AKA we want to discrimimate and get punished for it language put in.

Any legislator with a sense of duty would vote to override now that this court has stated the obvious, if only to save the people the cost of Christie's shenanigans.

The reason I am not sure I agree with this assessment is that he is already hated by the fundamentalists for supporting Obama during the hurricane. The social neanderthals are already against him. So why should he still be a douche on marriage if he doesn't actually just think that way?

Re: NJ Judge Orders Statewide Marriage Equality!

Republicans continue to be on the wrong side of history on every issue.

This fact has amazed me for many years.

They were on the wrong side of civil rights, social security, and Medicare. Their economic policies have twice lead the USA into great depressions.

They have embraced torture and the imprisonment of people forever without charge or trial. They have fabricated lies to support the initiation of illegal wars.

They oppose the scientific process and reason and scholarship in general. They oppose feeding the poor. They oppose treating the sick. They oppose gay rights. They oppose voting by poor and immigrant citizens. They oppose the separation of church and state. They object to saving the planet for all mankind because it might inconvenience a tiny number of very rich people a little bit.

You would think that Republicans would have to be right at least occasionally, just by random chance. But, they are wrong about everything, and have been for decades.

The most positive things one can generally say about a society - benevolence, compassion, sympathy, generosity, tolerance, inclusion - Republicans pride themselves on rejecting. It is spectacular folly.

I don't understand how that party survives.

I'm not sure it is possible to know what is in the heart of Christie.

We formerly had a poster here in CE&P who claimed to support Mitt Romney because he was sure that Romney was lying about his hatred of gays, and would change his position entirely, once elected (despite extraordinary evidence to the contrary). That always struck me as humorous - to support a candidate because you believe he is lying about himself and plans to do a bait and switch on the voters, once he is in office.

It emphasizes certain problems within the Republican Party, however. What does it say of a party whose leaders cannot get nominated without pretending to be one person, then cannot get elected without pretending to be another? Don't voters deserve the truth? What is wrong with that party that dishonesty is necessary in order to "succeed?"

And, if Christie is not the homophobe he claims to be, what does it say of a man who would deny tens of thousands of citizens fundamental human rights in order to advance himself?

^ Nailed it. Well stated.

Christie isn't the only one that's used our marriage rights for political purposes.
When all is said and done and we have marriage equality, don't praise the Senate majority leader Stephen Sweeney in any way.
He and the Democrats had a chance to pass marriage equality in 09 while Corzine was still in office and chose not to.
Keep in mind by that time it was becoming more and more obvious the promises of civil unions being equal to marriage was a big fat lie.
And yet,he and the others did nothing to stop it.
THere are no clean hands in this. If they want to make it right, they will override Christie's veto.
If nothing else, there is no way the weak defense the state gave is going to stand up.

Close but not exactly on civil rights. The Dems were more opposed to that at the time. The "solid south" of white supremacist led governments was mostly Dems (George Wallace, Lester Maddox, etc).

And Republican Eisenhower was the president who used federal troops to enforce civil rights.

It's true that the local politicians were largely Democrats, initially. But, nationally, the civil rights movement was a Democratic Party phenomenon which was aggressively opposed by Republicans. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the "solid south" became solidly Republican and many of those local Democratic politicians changed parties so that they might practice their bigotry in peace.

Sorry but that statement is utter bullshit. Civil rights enjoyed a 80 to 82 percent margin of favor-ability in republican ranks.
